The Wise King and the Bee

Long ago there lived in the East the greatest king in the world.むかし、東の国に、世界でいちばんえらい王さまがすんでいました。

It was believed that no one could ask him a question which he could not answer.王さまに答えられない問いを出せる人はだれもいない、としんじられていました。

Wise men came from far and near, but they were never able to puzzle King Solomon.かしこい人たちが近くからも遠くからもやって来ましたが、だれもソロモン王をこまらせることはできませんでした。

He knew all the trees and plants.王さまは、木や草のことを何でも知っていました。

He understood the beasts, fowls and creeping things almost as well as he did people.けものや鳥やはう虫のことも、人間と同じくらいよくわかっていました。

The fame of his knowledge spread into all lands.王さまのちえの名は、すべての国に広まりました。 In the south, the great Queen of Sheba heard of the wonderful wisdom of Solomon and said, “I shall test his power for myself.”南の国の、えらいシバの女王は、ソロモンのすばらしいちえのことを聞いて、「わたしが自分でその力をためしてみましょう」と言いました。

She picked some clover blossoms from the field and bade a great artist make for her, in wax, flowers, buds and leaves exactly like them.女王は、野原からクローバーの花をつみ、えらいげいじゅつ家に、それとそっくりな花やつぼみや葉を、ろうで作らせました。

She was much pleased when they were finished, for she herself could see no difference in the two bunches.できあがると、女王はとてもよろこびました。女王自身にも、二つの花たばのちがいがわからなかったからです。

She carried them to the king and said, “Choose, Oh wise king, which are the real flowers?”女王はそれを王さまのところへ持っていき、「かしこい王さま、どちらが本物の花か、おえらびください」と言いました。

At first King Solomon was puzzled, but soon he saw a bee buzzing at the window.はじめソロモン王はこまりましたが、すぐに、まどのところで一ぴきのハチがブンブン言っているのに気がつきました。

“Ah,” said he, “here is one come to help me in my choice.「ああ」と王さまは言いました。「わたしがえらぶのを手つだいに来てくれた者がいる。 Throw open the window for my friend.”わたしの友だちのために、まどを開けておくれ。」

Then the Queen of Sheba bowed her head and said:すると、シバの女王は頭を下げて言いました。

“You are indeed a wise king, but I begin to understand your wisdom.「あなたは本当にかしこい王さまです。でも、あなたのちえがどういうものか、わかりかけてきました。 I thank you for this lesson.”教えてくださって、ありがとうございます。」
