The Swan Maidens

ALONG, long time ago there was born in the east a wonderful king.ずっと、ずっとむかし、東の国に、すばらしい王さまが生まれました。

He was called “The King of the Golden Sword.”王さまは「金のつるぎの王」とよばれていました。

Every day he came in his golden chariot scattering heat, light and happiness among his people.王さまは毎日、金の車に乗ってやって来て、人々にねつと光としあわせをふりまきました。

Every day he passed from his palace in the east far over to his throne in the west.王さまは毎日、東の宮でんから、ずっと西の王ざまで通っていきました。

He never missed a day for he wanted to see that everyone had a full share of his gifts.一日も休みませんでした。だれもが、王さまのおくりものをじゅうぶんにもらっているか、見ておきたかったのです。

Throughout the kingdom the birds sang and the flowers bloomed.国じゅうで、鳥が歌い、花がさいていました。 The sky was full of beautiful pictures which were constantly changing.空は、たえず形をかえる美しい絵でいっぱいでした。

The king had many daughters who were called swan maidens.王さまには、白鳥のむすめとよばれる、たくさんのむすめがいました。

They were as graceful as swans and usually wore white featherlike dresses.むすめたちは白鳥のように上品で、たいてい、羽のような白いドレスを着ていました。

The swan maidens loved their good father and each one longed to help him in his work.白鳥のむすめたちは、やさしいお父さんが大すきで、だれもが王さまの仕事を手つだいたいと思っていました。

Sometimes the king saw that the grass was brown or the buds were not coming out.ときどき王さまは、草が茶色になっていたり、つぼみが開いていなかったりするのを見かけました。

Then he called the swan maidens to him and said, “My children, this must not be.すると王さまは、白鳥のむすめたちをよんで言いました。「むすめたちよ、これではいけない。 There is nothing more beautiful in the kingdom than the green grass and the trees.国の中で、緑の草や木ほど美しいものはないのだ。 They need your care.”草や木には、おまえたちのお世話がいるのだよ。」

Gladly each maiden changed her dress and set out at once on her journey.むすめたちはよろこんで、それぞれドレスを着がえ、すぐに旅に出かけました。 Often they could not all work upon the grass and the buds.ときには、全員が草やつぼみの仕事をすることはできませんでした。

Some of them ran off to play with the stones in the brook.小川の石と遊びに、かけていってしまうむすめもいました。 The best ones went down to feed the roots and worms, and worked out of sight.いちばんよいむすめたちは、地面の下へおりていって、根やミミズに食べ物をあげ、だれにも見えない所ではたらきました。

When their tasks were finished they always hurried back to their father, the king.仕事がおわると、むすめたちはいつも、お父さんの王さまのところへ急いで帰りました。

They went so noiselessly and swiftly that for a long time their way of travelling was a mystery.むすめたちは音もなく、とても速く行き来したので、長いあいだ、どうやって旅をするのかはなぞでした。

In the fall, the king called the bravest swan maidens to him.秋になると、王さまは、いちばんゆうかんな白鳥のむすめたちをよびました。 He told them they must go away for a long time.王さまはむすめたちに、長いあいだ遠くへ行かなければならないと言いました。

The swan maidens wrapped themselves in white, feathery blankets and came softly down to the shivering flowers.白鳥のむすめたちは、羽のような白いもうふに身をつつみ、寒さにふるえている花たちのところへ、そっとおりてきました。

Gently they placed a white spread on the earth and left no small seed uncovered.むすめたちはやさしく、大地に白いしきものをかけ、小さなたね一つものこさずにおおいました。

At last, when the king smiled and their work was done, they stole away so softly and happily that no one missed them.とうとう王さまがほほえんで、むすめたちの仕事がおわると、むすめたちはとてもしずかに、楽しそうにそっと去っていったので、だれもいなくなったことに気がつきませんでした。
