the Truffle-Hunting Beetle

Before we come to the Beetle, I must first tell you about my friend, the Dog, who hunts truffles, which are underground mushrooms.甲虫の話をする前に、まず私の友だち、トリュフをさがすイヌのことをお話ししなければなりません。トリュフというのは、地面の下にできるキノコです。 Dogs are quite often used for this purpose, and I have had the good fortune on several occasions to go with a Dog who was a great expert in this line.イヌはよくこの仕事に使われます。私は運よく何度か、この道の名人のイヌについていくことができました。 He was certainly nothing to look at, this artist whom I was so anxious to see at work: just a Dog, placid and deliberate in his ways, ugly, unkempt; the sort of Dog you would never have at your own fireside.私がぜひ仕事ぶりを見たいと思っていたこの名人は、見た目はまったくぱっとしませんでした。ただのイヌで、おっとりしていて動きはのんびり、みっともなくて毛もぼさぼさ。自分の家のだんろのそばには、けっして置きたくないようなイヌでした。 Talent and poverty often go hand in hand.才能とまずしさは、よくいっしょにあるものです。

His master, a celebrated truffle-gatherer in the village, was at first afraid that I wanted to steal his secrets and set up a rival business, but when he found that I only made drawings of mushrooms and set down lists of underground vegetable things, he let me join his expeditions.イヌの飼い主は、村で有名なトリュフとりの名人でした。はじめは、私がひみつをぬすんで商売がたきになるつもりではないかと心配していましたが、私がキノコの絵をかいたり、地面の下の植物の名前を書きとめたりしているだけだとわかると、さがしに行くのについてこさせてくれました。

It was agreed between us that the Dog should act as he pleased and receive a bit of bread as his reward after each discovery, no matter whether the underground mushroom he discovered was a real truffle, the kind people like to eat, or an uneatable one.私たちはこう決めました。イヌは好きなようにさせること。そして、見つけたのが人が喜んで食べる本物のトリュフでも、食べられないキノコでも、見つけるたびにほうびとしてパンをひとかけらあたえること。 In no case was the master to drive the dog away from a spot where experience told him there was nothing salable to be found.売れるものは何もないと飼い主が経験からわかっている場所でも、けっしてイヌを追いはらわないことにしました。 As far as my studies went, I did not care whether the mushrooms were edible or not.私の研究にとっては、キノコが食べられるかどうかは、どうでもよかったのです。

Conducted in this way, the expedition was very successful.こうして出かけてみると、大成功でした。 The busy Dog trotted along with his nose to the wind, at a moderate pace.働き者のイヌは、鼻を風に向けて、ほどよい速さでとことこ歩いていきました。 Every little while he stopped, questioned the ground with his nostrils, scratched for a few seconds, without too much excitement, then looked up at his master as if to say:ときどき立ち止まっては、鼻のあなで地面にたずね、あまりこうふんせずに数秒ひっかいて、それから飼い主を見上げました。まるでこう言うように。

“Here we are, here we are!「ここです、ここですよ！ On my word of honor as a Dog, there’s a truffle here.”イヌのほこりにかけて、ここにトリュフがあります。」

And he spoke the truth.そして、イヌは本当のことを言っていました。 The master dug at the spot indicated.飼い主は、イヌが教えた場所をほりました。 If the trowel went astray, the Dog showed the man how to put it right by sniffing at the bottom of the hole.移植ごてが見当ちがいの所をほると、イヌは穴の底をかいで、正しい所を教えました。 The mushroom was always there.キノコはいつもそこにありました。 A Dog’s nose cannot lie.イヌの鼻はうそをつきません。 But he made us gather all sorts of underground mushrooms: the large and the small, the fresh and the decayed, the scented and the unscented, the fragrant and those which were the reverse.けれども、イヌはあらゆる種類の地下のキノコをとらせました。大きいのも小さいのも、新しいのもくさったのも、においのあるのもないのも、いいにおいのものも、その反対のものも。 I was surprised at my collection, which included most of the underground fungi of the neighborhood.集まったものを見て、私はおどろきました。このあたりの地下のキノコのほとんどがそろっていたのです。

Is it smell as we understand it that guides the Dog in his search?イヌがさがすときに手がかりにしているのは、私たちが考えるようなにおいなのでしょうか。 I do not believe that it is, otherwise he would not point out so many varieties which smell so very different.私はそうは思いません。もしそうなら、こんなにちがうにおいのたくさんの種類を教えたりはしないでしょう。 He must perceive something that we cannot.イヌは、私たちには感じられない何かを感じとっているにちがいありません。 It is a mistake to compare everything by human standards.何でも人間の物さしではかるのはまちがいです。 There are more sensations in the world than we know of.世の中には、私たちが知っているよりたくさんの感覚があるのです。 Such secrets are known to insects better than to other animals, like the Dog or the Pig, who also hunts truffles with its nose.こうしたひみつは、イヌや、やはり鼻でトリュフをさがすブタのようなほかの動物よりも、虫たちのほうがよく知っています。 We will hear now about the Truffle-hunting Beetle.では、トリュフをさがす甲虫のお話を聞きましょう。

This is a pretty little black Beetle, with a pale and velvety belly, round as a cherry-stone and much the same size.これはかわいらしい小さな黒い甲虫で、おなかはうす色でビロードのようです。サクランボのたねのようにまるく、大きさもだいたい同じくらいです。 By rubbing the tip of its abdomen against the edge of its wing-cases it makes a soft chirrup like that which little birds make when their mother comes with their food.おなかの先を前ばね（かたい羽）のふちにこすりつけて、ひなどりが、えさを持ってきた母鳥にするような、やさしいチッチッという声を出します。 The male wears a graceful horn on his head.オスは頭に、すてきなつのを一本はやしています。

I found these Beetles in a certain pine-woods where there are plenty of mushrooms.私はこの甲虫を、キノコがたくさん生えるある松林で見つけました。 It is a pleasant place, where my whole family like to go in the mild days of autumn.気持ちのよい所で、秋のおだやかな日には、家族みんなでよく出かけます。 They find everything there: old Magpies’ nests, made of bundles of twigs; Jays squabbling with each other, after filling their crops with acorns on the oaks hard by; Rabbits suddenly starting out of a rosemary bush, showing their little white upturned tails.そこには何でもあります。小枝のたばでつくった古いカササギの巣。近くのカシの木でドングリをおなかいっぱいつめこんだあと、けんかしているカケスたち。ローズマリーのしげみから急にとび出して、小さな白いしっぽをぴょこんと上に向けて見せるウサギ。 There is lovely sand for the children to dig tunnels in, sand that is easy to build into rows of huts which we thatch with moss and top with a bit of reed by way of a chimney.子どもたちがトンネルをほるのにうってつけのすてきな砂もあります。小屋をいくつも並べてつくるのにちょうどいい砂で、私たちは小屋の屋根をコケでふき、えんとつのかわりにアシのくきをてっぺんに立てます。 And when we are there we lunch off an apple to the sound of the Æolian harps of the breezes softly sighing through the pine-needles!そこにいるときは、マツの葉のあいだをそっとふきぬける風の、たてごと（エオリアンハープ）のような音を聞きながら、リンゴでお昼ごはんにします！

Yes, for the children it is a real paradise.そうです、子どもたちにとっては、本当の天国なのです。 The grown-ups also enjoy it, and one of my chief enjoyments is watching my Truffle-beetle.大人も楽しみます。そして私のいちばんの楽しみの一つは、トリュフ甲虫をながめることです。 His burrows may be seen here and there.その巣穴は、あちこちに見られます。 The door is left open and surrounded merely by a padding of sand.入り口は開けっぱなしで、まわりに砂が少しもり上がっているだけです。 The burrow is about nine inches deep, going straight down in very loose soil.巣穴は深さ23センチほどで、とてもやわらかい土にまっすぐほり下げられています。 When I cut into it with a knife, I often find that it is empty.ナイフで切りこんでみると、からっぽのことがよくあります。 The insect has left during the night, having finished its business there and gone to settle elsewhere.虫は夜のうちに出ていったのです。そこでの用事をすませて、よそへ住みかを移したのです。 The Truffle-beetle is a tramp, a night-walker, who leaves his home whenever he feels like it and easily gets a new one.トリュフ甲虫は、気の向くままに家を出て、かんたんに新しい家を手に入れる、さすらいの夜歩き屋なのです。 Sometimes I do find the insect at the bottom of the pit, always alone, sometimes a male, sometimes a female, never two at the same time.ときには穴の底で虫が見つかることもあります。いつも一ぴきだけで、オスのこともあればメスのこともありますが、二ひきいっしょのことはけっしてありません。 The burrow is not a house for the family; it is a sort of bachelor house, dug for comfort only for the solitary Beetle.巣穴は家族の家ではありません。ひとりぼっちの甲虫が、自分が気持ちよく過ごすためだけにほった、ひとりぐらしの家のようなものです。

The Beetle in this house is clutching a small mushroom, usually partly eaten.この家の甲虫は、小さなキノコをしっかりかかえています。たいていは食べかけです。 He will not part from it.けっしてはなそうとしません。 It is his treasure, his worldly goods.それはこの虫の宝物、この世でただ一つの財産なのです。 Scattered crumbs tell us that we have caught him feasting.食べかすが散らばっているので、食事のさいちゅうにつかまえたことがわかります。

When we take his prize away from him we find that it is a sort of little underground mushroom, closely related to the truffle.そのごちそうを取り上げてみると、トリュフにとても近い、地下にできる小さなキノコの一種だとわかります。

This throws a light upon the habits of the Beetle and his reason for making new burrows so often.これで、この甲虫のくらし方と、なぜそんなにたびたび新しい巣穴をほるのかが、わかってきます。 In the calm of the twilight, the little gadabout takes to the fields, chirruping softly as he goes, cheering himself with song.静かな夕ぐれになると、この小さな出歩き屋は野原へ出かけていきます。歩きながらやさしくチッチッと鳴き、歌で自分を元気づけているのです。 He explores the soil, questions it as to its contents, just as the Dog does when hunting for truffles.トリュフをさがすイヌと同じように、土を調べ、中に何があるのかたずねます。 His sense of smell tells him when the coveted morsel is underneath, covered by a few inches of sand.においの感覚で、ほしいごちそうが数センチの砂の下にうまっているのがわかるのです。 Certain of the exact spot where the thing lies, he digs straight down and never fails to reach it.ごちそうがある場所をはっきりつきとめると、まっすぐ下へほっていき、けっして取りそこないません。 As long as the provisions last, he does not go out again.食べ物があるあいだは、もう外に出ません。 Blissfully he feeds at the bottom of the well he has dug to reach the mushroom.キノコにたどり着くためにほった井戸のような穴の底で、しあわせそうに食べています。 He does not care whether his door is open or not.戸が開いていようがいまいが、気にしません。

When he has eaten all his food, he moves, looking for more, and to find it he digs a new burrow, which will be given up in its turn.食べ物をすっかり食べてしまうと、もっとさがしに引っこします。そして新しい巣穴をほり、その巣穴もまた、そのうちにすてられるのです。 Thus he spends all autumn and the next spring, the seasons for mushrooms, traveling from one of his little hotels to another.こうしてこの甲虫は、キノコの季節である秋と次の春のあいだずっと、自分の小さなホテルからホテルへと旅をして過ごすのです。

This truffle which the Beetle hunts appears to have no particular odor.この甲虫がさがすトリュフには、とくににおいがないようです。 How, then, can he detect it from the ground over the place where it is buried?では、うまっている場所の上の地面から、どうやって見つけ出すのでしょう。 He is a clever Beetle, and we do not know yet just how he manages it.かしこい甲虫ですが、どうやっているのか、私たちにはまだわかっていないのです。
