Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse

Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse both lived in a house,ティティネズミとタッティネズミは、2ひきいっしょに1けんの家にすんでいました。

Titty Mouse went a leasing and Tatty Mouse went a leasing,ティティネズミは落ちぼひろいに行き、タッティネズミも落ちぼひろいに行きました。

So they both went a leasing.それで2ひきとも、落ちぼひろいに行きました。

Titty Mouse leased an ear of corn, and Tatty Mouse leased an ear of corn,ティティネズミはむぎのほを1本ひろい、タッティネズミもむぎのほを1本ひろいました。

So they both leased an ear of corn.それで2ひきとも、むぎのほを1本ずつひろいました。

Titty Mouse made a pudding, and Tatty Mouse made a pudding,ティティネズミはプディングを作り、タッティネズミもプディングを作りました。

So they both made a pudding.それで2ひきとも、プディングを作りました。

And Tatty Mouse put her pudding into the pot to boil,タッティネズミは、自分のプディングをなべに入れてにました。

But when Titty went to put hers in, the pot tumbled over, and scalded her to death.ところがティティが自分のを入れようとすると、なべがひっくりかえって、ティティはあついおゆをかぶって死んでしまいました。

Then Tatty sat down and wept; then a three-legged stool said: “Tatty, why do you weep?”そこでタッティはすわりこんでなきました。すると3本足のこしかけが言いました。「タッティ、どうしてないているの？」 “Titty's dead,” said Tatty, “and so I weep;” “then,” said the stool, “I'll hop,” so the stool hopped.「ティティが死んじゃったの」とタッティは言いました。「だからなくの。」「それなら」とこしかけは言いました。「ぼくははねよう。」そしてこしかけは、ぴょんぴょんはねました。

Then a broom in the corner of the room said, “Stool, why do you hop?”すると、へやのすみのほうきが言いました。「こしかけさん、どうしてはねているの？」 “Oh!” said the stool, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, and so I hop;” “then,” said the broom, “I'll sweep,” so the broom began to sweep.「ああ！」とこしかけは言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、だからぼくははねるのさ。」「それなら」とほうきは言いました。「わたしははこう。」そしてほうきは、はきはじめました。

“Then,” said the door, “Broom, why do you sweep?”「それなら」と戸が言いました。「ほうきさん、どうしてはいているの？」 “Oh!” said the broom, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, and the stool hops, and so I sweep;” “Then,” said the door, “I'll jar,” so the door jarred.「ああ！」とほうきは言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、だからわたしははくの。」「それなら」と戸は言いました。「ぼくはガタガタ鳴ろう。」そして戸はガタガタ鳴りました。

“Then,” said the window, “Door, why do you jar?”「それなら」とまどが言いました。「戸さん、どうしてガタガタ鳴っているの？」 “Oh!” said the door, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, and the stool hops, and the broom sweeps, and so I jar.”「ああ！」と戸は言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、ほうきははく、だからぼくはガタガタ鳴るのさ。」

“Then,” said the window, “I'll creak,” so the window creaked.「それなら」とまどは言いました。「わたしはギシギシいおう。」そしてまどはギシギシいいました。 Now there was an old form outside the house, and when the window creaked, the form said: “Window, why do you creak?”さて、家の外には古いベンチがありました。まどがギシギシいうと、ベンチが言いました。「まどさん、どうしてギシギシいっているの？」 “Oh!” said the window, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, and the stool hops, and the broom sweeps, the door jars, and so I creak.”「ああ！」とまどは言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、ほうきははく、戸はガタガタ鳴る、だからわたしはギシギシいうの。」

“Then,” said the walnut-tree, “I'll shed my leaves,” so the walnut-tree shed all its beautiful green leaves.「それなら」とクルミの木は言いました。「わたしは葉っぱを落としましょう。」そしてクルミの木は、美しい緑の葉っぱをぜんぶ落としました。 Now there was a little bird perched on one of the boughs of the tree, and when all the leaves fell, it said: “Walnut-tree, why do you shed your leaves?”さて、その木のえだの1本に、小鳥が1羽とまっていました。葉っぱがぜんぶ落ちると、小鳥は言いました。「クルミの木さん、どうして葉っぱを落とすの？」 “Oh!” said the tree, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, the stool hops, and the broom sweeps, the door jars, and the window creaks, the old form runs round the house, and so I shed my leaves.”「ああ！」と木は言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、ほうきははく、戸はガタガタ鳴る、まどはギシギシいう、古いベンチは家のまわりを走る、だからわたしは葉っぱを落とすの。」

“Then,” said the little bird, “I'll moult all my feathers,” so he moulted all his pretty feathers.「それなら」と小鳥は言いました。「ぼくは羽をぜんぶぬこう。」そして小鳥は、きれいな羽をぜんぶぬきました。 Now there was a little girl walking below, carrying a jug of milk for her brothers and sisters' supper, and when she saw the poor little bird moult all its feathers, she said: “Little bird, why do you moult all your feathers?”さて、その下を、小さな女の子が、弟や妹たちの夕ごはんのミルクの入ったつぼを持って歩いていました。かわいそうな小鳥が羽をぜんぶぬくのを見て、女の子は言いました。「小鳥さん、どうして羽をぜんぶぬくの？」 “Oh!” said the little bird, “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, the stool hops, and the broom sweeps, the door jars, and the window creaks, the old form runs round the house, the walnut-tree sheds its leaves, and so I moult all my feathers.”「ああ！」と小鳥は言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、ほうきははく、戸はガタガタ鳴る、まどはギシギシいう、古いベンチは家のまわりを走る、クルミの木は葉っぱを落とす、だからぼくは羽をぜんぶぬくのさ。」

“Then,” said the little girl, “I'll spill the milk,” so she dropt the pitcher and spilt the milk.「それなら」と女の子は言いました。「わたしはミルクをこぼしましょう。」そして女の子は、つぼを落としてミルクをこぼしました。 Now there was an old man just by on the top of a ladder thatching a rick, and when he saw the little girl spill the milk, he said: “Little girl, what do you mean by spilling the milk, your little brothers and sisters must go without their supper.”さて、すぐそばで、おじいさんがはしごのてっぺんにのぼって、わらの山の屋根をふいていました。女の子がミルクをこぼすのを見て、おじいさんは言いました。「おじょうちゃん、ミルクをこぼしたりして、どういうつもりだい。小さな弟や妹たちが夕ごはんぬきになってしまうよ。」 Then said the little girl: “Titty's dead, and Tatty weeps, the stool hops, and the broom sweeps, the door jars, and the window creaks, the old form runs round the house, the walnut-tree sheds all its leaves, the little bird moults all its feathers, and so I spill the milk.”すると女の子は言いました。「ティティは死んじゃった、タッティはなく、こしかけははねる、ほうきははく、戸はガタガタ鳴る、まどはギシギシいう、古いベンチは家のまわりを走る、クルミの木は葉っぱを落とす、小鳥は羽をぬく、だからわたしはミルクをこぼすの。」

“Oh!” said the old man, “then I'll tumble off the ladder and break my neck,” so he tumbled off the ladder and broke his neck; and when the old man broke his neck, the great walnut-tree fell down with a crash, and upset the old form and house, and the house falling knocked the window out, and the window knocked the door down, and the door upset the broom, and the broom upset the stool, and poor little Tatty Mouse was buried beneath the ruins.「なんと！」とおじいさんは言いました。「それなら、わしははしごから落ちて首のほねをおろう。」そしておじいさんは、はしごから落ちて首のほねをおってしまいました。おじいさんが首のほねをおると、大きなクルミの木がドシーンとたおれて、古いベンチと家をひっくりかえしました。家がたおれてまどがはずれ、まどは戸をたおし、戸はほうきをひっくりかえし、ほうきはこしかけをひっくりかえし、かわいそうなタッティネズミは、くずれた家の下じきになってしまいました。
