目安 4分30秒The Gut-Brain Connection
For centuries, people have spoken of "gut feelings," but only recently have scientists begun to examine seriously whether the digestive system can influence the mind. The gut contains hundreds of millions of nerve cells, leading some researchers to call it a "second brain," and it is linked to the brain by the vagus nerve, which carries signals in both directions. Moreover, the trillions of bacteria living in the intestines produce a range of chemicals, some of which resemble substances the brain uses to regulate mood. These discoveries have raised the intriguing possibility that microbes might affect how people think and feel.
Experiments on animals have produced striking results. Mice raised in completely sterile conditions, and therefore lacking gut bacteria, tend to show exaggerated responses to stress. In some studies, transferring bacteria from anxious mice to calm ones even appeared to make the calm animals more anxious. Such findings have generated considerable excitement, as well as a growing market for products claiming to improve mental health through the gut. Researchers, however, caution against drawing firm conclusions about humans. Laboratory mice live in highly artificial environments, and their digestive systems differ from ours in important respects.
Evidence from humans remains limited. Most studies are relatively small and show only correlations; for example, people with depression often have different gut bacteria from people without it. Yet it is unclear which is the cause and which is the effect, since depression frequently alters appetite and eating habits, which could in turn change the bacteria. A handful of trials have tested whether probiotic supplements can relieve symptoms, but their results have been inconsistent. Many scientists therefore believe that large, long-term studies will be needed before doctors can confidently recommend gut-based treatments for mental illness.

目安 2分M Mom says you've started eating fermented foods every day. What's that about?
W I read that foods like yogurt and kimchi support healthy gut bacteria. My doctor said it couldn't hurt, so I'm giving it a try.
M Have you noticed any difference?
W My digestion seems better, but honestly, I also started exercising at the same time, so it's hard to say which one helped.
M Makes sense. Are you taking those expensive probiotic supplements too?
W No. My doctor told me that the evidence for most of them is weak, and that eating a variety of vegetables is probably more effective.

Yes, I do. First, many serious diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease, are closely linked to eating habits, so a healthy diet can reduce medical costs. Second, research on gut bacteria shows that food may affect our mood and immune system, which means diet influences our overall well-being.
