目安 4分Changes to School Clubs
For many years, club activities have been an important part of Japanese school life. After classes and on weekends, students practice sports, music, and other activities together. Teachers usually coach the clubs, often without extra pay, even on weekends. As a result, many teachers work very long hours, and some even have to coach sports that they have never played themselves. This situation has been seen as one cause of teachers' heavy workload.
To reduce teachers' burden, the government began moving weekend club activities from schools to local communities in 2023. Under the new system, coaches from local sports clubs or cultural groups instruct students instead of teachers. Supporters believe students will benefit from learning from experts. In addition, students from several schools can join the same group, which is helpful in areas where individual schools do not have enough members to form a team.
However, the change has raised some concerns. Some families worry about the costs, since they may have to pay fees to community groups, while club activities at school were almost free. There are also concerns that rural areas may not have enough qualified coaches. Because of these problems, the government has given local communities more time to make the change, and many areas are still looking for the best way to do it.
