目安 4分Green Walls
Many cities around the world are covering the walls and roofs of buildings with plants. These green walls first became popular in Europe, and today they can be seen in cities such as Singapore, Paris, and Tokyo. Some of them are huge, covering the sides of tall office buildings or shopping centers. Many are designed by artists, and some have become popular spots where tourists like to take photos.
However, green walls do more than make cities look beautiful. In summer, the leaves block sunlight and release water into the air, so buildings with green walls stay cooler and need less air conditioning. This can help reduce the heat island effect, in which cities become much hotter than the surrounding countryside. Plants also catch dust and take in carbon dioxide, which improves air quality. In addition, some studies suggest that simply seeing plants reduces stress.
Despite these benefits, green walls have some disadvantages. They need regular watering and care, and the systems that supply the water can break down. If the plants die, the walls may look worse than ordinary walls. Furthermore, the costs of installing and maintaining them can be high. For these reasons, some cities, including Tokyo, offer financial support to building owners who want to install green walls or roof gardens.
