目安 4分Going Cashless
For many years, Japan was known as a country where people preferred to pay in cash. Crime rates were low, so people felt safe carrying large amounts of money, and many small shops did not accept credit cards. In 2019, cashless payments made up only about a quarter of all payments in Japan, which was much lower than in countries such as South Korea and China.
In recent years, however, the situation has changed quickly. The government set a goal of increasing cashless payments, and it offered points to shoppers who paid by card or smartphone. Many people also began to avoid touching cash during the COVID-19 pandemic. Smartphone payment services became popular because users only need to scan a code at the register. By 2023, cashless payments had risen to nearly forty percent of all payments.
Although cashless payments are convenient, they also have some disadvantages. Elderly people who are not used to smartphones may find them difficult to use. Shops have to pay fees to payment companies each time a customer pays, which can be a burden for small businesses. In addition, if there is a power cut or a system problem, people may not be able to pay at all. For these reasons, experts say that cash will still play an important role for some time.
