目安 4分30秒Libraries in the Digital Age
When the internet made vast amounts of information freely available, many people predicted the decline of public libraries. Why, critics asked, would anyone visit a building full of books when almost any fact could be found on a smartphone? Book lending has indeed fallen in some countries, and budget cuts have forced some local libraries to reduce their opening hours or close altogether. Yet libraries as institutions have proven remarkably adaptable. Many now function as community centers, offering a wide range of services that go far beyond lending books.
In Finland, for example, Helsinki's Oodi Central Library, which opened in 2018, includes recording studios, 3D printers, sewing machines, and spaces where citizens can hold meetings free of charge. Its designers intended it as a shared "living room" for the city, and it attracts large numbers of visitors each year. Libraries elsewhere help people fill out government forms online, run digital skills courses for older residents, and provide support for newly arrived immigrants. For people without a computer or home internet connection, the library may be the only place where they can apply for jobs or access public services.
Not everyone welcomes these changes. Some traditionalists worry that the growing emphasis on events and technology weakens libraries' core mission of promoting reading and quiet study. Librarians, too, sometimes feel stretched by duties for which they were not trained. Supporters respond that libraries have always existed to provide equal access to knowledge, and that in the twenty-first century, fulfilling that mission requires access to technology and skills as well as books. From this perspective, libraries are not abandoning their purpose but reinterpreting it for a new era.
リスニング(Part1 会話形式)
目安 2分W Dad, I'm going to the library to study this afternoon.
M The library? Don't you have everything you need online?
W Most of it, but it's quiet there, and they have a room where students can reserve tables. Plus, I need to use their database of newspaper archives.
M Can't you access that from home?
W Only some of it. The full collection is available only on library computers because of licensing rules.
M I see. Things have changed since my day. We just went there to borrow novels.
W You should come with me sometime. They also have free seminars on things like smartphone photography.
