To solve this problem, experts suggest a method called "rolling stock." Instead of keeping special emergency food, people buy extra amounts of everyday foods, such as canned goods and instant noodles. They eat the oldest items first and buy new ones to replace them. In this way, they always have fresh supplies at home without wasting food.
Preparing for disasters also involves more than food and water. Families should attach heavy furniture to walls so that it will not fall over during an earthquake, and they should check their local hazard maps to find out which areas are at risk of flooding. It is also important to decide in advance where family members will meet if they are separated. Experts say that such simple steps can save lives when a disaster occurs.
