Tips for Master models

1

Big, thin paper (35 cm+)

Master models split the paper into many small flaps, so you need large, thin paper such as washi or thin foil.

2

Sink folds start with perfect creases

Before a sink, re-crease every mountain and valley around it, open the paper a little, then push the center in. A closed sink is pushed in without opening — even harder.

3

Shaping brings it to life

The angle of the neck, the direction of the legs, the curve of the back — a few minutes of shaping changes everything.

4

Wet-folding

Slightly dampen thick paper to fold soft curves that stay when it dries. Akira Yoshizawa made this technique famous.

5

Try folding from a crease pattern

Advanced folders sometimes fold from a crease pattern alone. The practice sheet on each model page is that model’s crease pattern.
