Story

The Virgin Mary, with a neck as long as a swan's, looks down at the baby Jesus on her lap. On the left are angels, and on the right are a column and a tiny figure. The painter was Parmigianino, from Parma in Italy. He began it in 1534, but he died in 1540 at the age of 37, and it was left unfinished. It is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

A woman ordered this painting for a chapel in a church in Parma. Earlier Renaissance artists tried to paint natural, well-balanced bodies. Parmigianino, however, made the neck, fingers and legs longer on purpose to make them look more elegant. This style of bending the rules is now called Mannerism.

In 1698, Prince Ferdinando de' Medici bought the painting and took it to Florence. It is now a favorite at the Uffizi. The art historian Ernst Gombrich wrote about it in his famous book 'The Story of Art.' He showed it as a new experiment that gave up perfect balance on purpose.

Mary has a very long neck. Her baby is very long, too. The painter made them long on purpose. He did not finish this picture. He died before he could finish it.
