A woman in a splendid dress stands with a little boy by her side. She is Eleanor of Toledo, the wife of Cosimo I de' Medici, ruler of Florence, and the boy is their son Giovanni, about two years old. The Medici court painter Bronzino made this portrait around 1545. It is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
Eleanor came from Spain. She was the daughter of the viceroy who ruled Naples. She married Cosimo in 1539, and they had eleven children. Bronzino painted the silk dress with its gold pattern, the net of pearls and every jewel with a smooth, shiny finish. Her face shows little feeling, so she looks noble, almost like a doll.
This portrait became the 'official face' of the Medici family, and the workshop made many copies of it. In 1549, Eleanor bought the Pitti Palace, which later became the Medici family's home. Today the Pitti Palace is part of the Uffizi Galleries, and her name is an important part of Florence's history.

For a long time, people said Eleanor was buried in the dress from this portrait. But when her tomb was examined, the dress found there was a different, simpler one. That dress is now carefully kept in the costume museum of the Pitti Palace.
The large gold pattern on the dress is said to be based on the pomegranate. Full of seeds, the pomegranate was a sign of many children and plenty. It may have been a perfect pattern for a duchess with eleven children.
The blue background is brighter around her head. Like the halo around a saint's head, it makes Eleanor seem to shine. Together with her perfect, almost cold face, it shows her as a noble figure above ordinary people.
In 1549, it was Eleanor, not her husband, who bought the Pitti Palace, now a famous sight in Florence. She came from a rich Spanish family, had her own money, and had real power in politics. The famous Boboli Gardens were later created behind the palace.
