Story金色にかすむ空に、白い衣の観音さまが立ち、右手の小さな水瓶から清らかな水をそそいでいます。その水が届く先には、すきとおった玉に包まれた赤ちゃん。これから地上に生まれていく命を表すと考えられていて、観音さまが母のように見守っています。描いたのは狩野芳崖。江戸時代から続く狩野派で学んだ日本画家で、1888年（明治21年）、人生の最後にこの絵に取り組みました。
Kannon, the Buddhist figure of mercy, stands in a golden, misty sky. From a small vase in the right hand, Kannon pours pure water. Below, a baby floats inside a clear bubble. The baby is often seen as a new life about to be born on earth, and Kannon seems to watch over it like a mother. The artist, Kanō Hōgai, trained in the Kanō school, a line of painters that went back hundreds of years. He worked on this painting in 1888, at the very end of his life.
明治のはじめ、西洋の文化が一気に入ってきて、昔ながらの日本画は時代おくれだと見られるようになりました。芳崖も苦しい暮らしを送っていましたが、アメリカ人の学者フェノロサと岡倉天心がその才能を見ぬき、「新しい日本画」づくりを応援しました。この絵では、伝統的な線の美しさに、西洋画のような空間の広がりや光の表現が組み合わされています。
In the early Meiji era, Western culture rushed into Japan. Many people began to see traditional Japanese painting as old-fashioned. Hōgai had a hard life, but the American scholar Ernest Fenollosa and Okakura Tenshin saw his talent. They supported him in creating a new kind of Japanese painting. In this work, the beauty of traditional lines meets a Western sense of deep space and light.
芳崖は亡くなる直前までこの絵に取り組み、1888年11月5日に60歳で亡くなりました。この絵は芳崖の絶筆とされています。翌年に開校する東京美術学校（いまの東京藝術大学）で教えるはずでしたが、その日を待たずに旅立ったのです。絵は今も東京藝術大学が大切に守っていて、国の重要文化財です。「近代日本画のはじまり」を告げる一枚として、美術の教科書や資料集でもおなじみです。
Hōgai worked on this painting until shortly before he died on November 5, 1888. He was 60, and it is known as his final work. He was supposed to teach at the new Tokyo School of Fine Arts, now Tokyo University of the Arts, but he died before it opened. The university still takes care of the painting today. It is an Important Cultural Property, and it often appears in art textbooks as the start of modern Japanese painting.

Secretsこれは芳崖の「絶筆」、つまり人生で最後に取り組んだ作品です。芳崖は亡くなる直前までこの絵を描き、1888年11月5日に亡くなりました。描き上げた数日後だったとも、完成まであと少しだったとも伝えられています。新しい命を思わせる絵が、画家の最後の仕事になったのです。
This is Hōgai's final work, the last painting he worked on. He painted it until shortly before he died on November 5, 1888. Some say he finished it a few days before his death, and others say it was almost finished. A painting about new life became the artist's last work.
観音さまの顔をよく見ると、口もとにうっすらと細いひげが描かれています。観音はインドでは男性の姿で表されましたが、中国や日本では女性のようなやさしい姿でも描かれるようになりました。昔の仏像や仏画には、ひげのある観音も見られます。やさしい「母」の絵に、ひげ。ふしぎな見どころです。
Look closely at Kannon's face. There is a thin mustache above the lips. In India, Kannon was first shown as a man. Later, in China and Japan, Kannon was also shown in gentle, womanly forms. Some old statues and paintings show Kannon with a mustache. A gentle 'mother' with a mustache is a fun surprise.
芳崖には「四天王」と呼ばれた4人の優秀な弟子がいました。彼らは、師匠がこの絵を仕上げていく様子を、すぐそばで見ていたと伝えられます。日本画が新しく生まれ変わる瞬間に、弟子たちは立ち会っていたのです。
Hōgai had four excellent students called his 'Four Heavenly Kings.' It is said that they watched closely as their teacher finished this painting. They saw the birth of a new style of Japanese painting with their own eyes.
芳崖は若いころ、江戸の狩野派の画塾で、橋本雅邦と同じ師匠のもとで学びました。芳崖の死後、雅邦は東京美術学校の先生になり、そこで横山大観や菱田春草を育てます。芳崖の夢は、仲間を通して次の世代へつながったのです。
As a young man, Hōgai studied under the same Kanō master as Hashimoto Gahō. After Hōgai died, Gahō became a teacher at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. There he taught Yokoyama Taikan and Hishida Shunsō. Hōgai's dream was passed on to the next generation through his friend.

3玉の中の赤ちゃんBaby in a bubble
シャボン玉のような玉に包まれ、手を合わせて観音さまを見上げる赤ちゃん。これから地上に生まれていく命を表すと考えられています。
Inside a bubble, the baby puts its hands together and looks up at Kannon. It is often seen as a life that is about to be born on earth.
4はるか下の山々Mountains far below
左下に、とがった山々がうっすら見えます。赤ちゃんがこれから向かう地上の世界です。空の高さがよくわかります。
Sharp mountains appear faintly in the lower left. This is the world below where the baby is going. They show how high up in the sky we are.
