A yakatabune is a boat you rent for dinner, and it is one of the few Edo-period pleasures that survived into ordinary modern use. The boat is low and flat-bottomed with a roof, and inside it is a tatami room with long low tables, so you sit on the floor as you would in a traditional restaurant, except that the view outside the windows is moving.
They cruise slowly around Tokyo Bay or up a river for two or three hours, and the standard meal is tempura fried on board and served in courses, with all-you-can-drink for the duration. The form goes back to the Edo period, when boats like this carried nobles and rich merchants out to watch the moon, the fireworks and the cherry blossoms along the riverbanks, and there are woodblock prints of them crowded together on the Sumida.
What it is used for now is mostly company parties and year-end gatherings, which means it books out in December. The two peak seasons are hanami in spring and the big summer fireworks, when the boats anchor in a crowd to watch.
