Kizuna is usually translated as bond, and the word carries more weight than the English suggests. Its origin is concrete: it referred to a rope used to tether a horse or a dog, something that physically holds. From there it came to mean a tie between people that is not easily undone, and the sense of being held is still part of it.
You hear it about family, about a team that went through something together, and about a neighborhood. In 2011, after the earthquake and tsunami in March, kizuna was chosen as the character of the year by the national kanji society, and it appeared everywhere: on posters, in speeches, in the names of relief funds.
