If you have small children in Japan, you will meet Anpanman everywhere, on TV, on snacks, on shoes and on toys. He was created by the writer and artist Yanase Takashi. The first picture book came out in 1973, and the TV cartoon began in 1988 and has been on the air for decades.
What surprises many visitors is how he helps people. His head is a bun filled with sweet bean paste, and when someone is hungry, he tears off a piece of his face and gives it to them. Afterward, the baker Uncle Jam makes him a new face.
His enemy is Baikinman, a germ who causes trouble, but the stories are gentle, and even the fights usually end with Baikinman just flying off into the sky. Yanase said that he wanted a hero who saves people from hunger, because he believed that was the most basic kind of justice. I think that idea is why the character still feels warm to adults, too.
