Ⅰ Read the passage and answer the questions.
In many cities around the world, empty lots and rooftops are being turned into community gardens. At first glance, these small plots of land may seem (1)trivial: they produce only a tiny fraction of the food a city consumes. Their real value, however, lies elsewhere. Studies of community gardens suggest that they bring together neighbors who might otherwise never speak to one another. Working side by side, people of different ages and backgrounds share tools, advice, and, eventually, the vegetables they grow. ( 2 ), the gardens can make neighborhoods safer, since areas that are cared for tend to attract less crime than abandoned ones. There are environmental benefits as well. Plants cool the air around them and absorb rainwater that would otherwise flood the streets. Of course, community gardens face challenges. Land in cities is expensive, and a garden can be (3)wiped out almost overnight if the owner decides to sell the lot. For this reason, some local governments now offer long-term contracts that protect gardens from development. Such policies recognize that a garden is ( 4 ) a place to grow food; it is a place to grow a community.

- 1The underlined word (1) is closest in meaning to .
Their real value, however, lies elsewhere.(しかし本当の価値は別にある)とも対比しているので unimportant(重要でない)。beautiful(美しい)、expensive(高価な)、dangerous(危険な)はどれも「ごく一部しか生まない」とつながらない。
【覚える】trivial = unimportant = insignificant = minor(ささいな)。 - 2Which of the following best fills blank ( 2 )?
答えc In addition
In contrast(対照的に)と Nevertheless(それにもかかわらず)は前後が対立するときに使う。
【覚える】利点を重ねる=In addition / Moreover / Also / What is more。 - 3The underlined phrase (3) is closest in meaning to .
wipe(拭く)からの連想で cleaned(きれいにされる)を選ばせるのが罠。expanded(拡大される)は逆。
【覚える】wipe out = destroy = eliminate(全滅させる)。 - 4Which of the following best fills blank ( 4 )?
答えd more than
A is more than B; it is C.=AはBにとどまらず、Cでもある。 - 5What does the author mean by "Their real value, however, lies elsewhere"?
答えb Community gardens are important for reasons other than food production.
more valuable in other countries(他国でのほうが価値がある)、should be moved to other places(ほかの場所に移すべき)は elsewhere を文字どおりの場所と取り違えた誤り。produce more food than people think(思ったより多く食料を作る)は本文と逆。
- 6Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of community gardens?
答えb They provide jobs for people who are out of work.
They help people get to know their neighbors(隣人と知り合う助けになる)は bring together neighbors に、They help prevent flooding(洪水を防ぐ)は absorb rainwater that would otherwise flood the streets に、They can reduce crime(犯罪を減らす)は attract less crime にそれぞれ対応する。
- 7Why do some local governments offer long-term contracts?
答えd To keep gardens from being lost when the land is sold.
長期契約は protect gardens from development(菜園を開発から守る)ためのもので、正解はこれを keep gardens from being lost と言い換えている。make land less expensive(土地を安くする)、help owners sell their land(持ち主が土地を売りやすくする)は逆か無関係。increase the amount of food(食料を増やす)は本文にない。
For this reason / That is why keep A from -ing=Aが〜しないようにする。 - 8Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
答えb Growing More Than Vegetables
解説最終文 a garden is more than a place to grow food; it is a place to grow a community(菜園は食料を育てる以上の場所で、地域社会を育てる場所だ)が筆者の主張で、Growing More Than Vegetables はそれを短くまとめた題名。How to Grow Vegetables on a Rooftop(屋上での野菜の育て方)、The History of Farming in Cities(都市農業の歴史)は本文にない。Why Land in Cities Is So Expensive(都市の土地が高い理由)は本文の一部にすぎない。
Ⅱ 問い「Should high schools require students to do volunteer work?」
答えd I do not think high schools should require students to do volunteer work.
I do not think … should require … Volunteer work has a long history(ボランティアには長い歴史がある)、There are many kinds of volunteer work(いろいろな種類がある)、Some people like volunteer work, and others do not(好きな人もいれば嫌いな人もいる)は、どれも賛成か反対かを示していない。
First, volunteer work loses its meaning when people are forced to do it.
答えa For example, when my school made everyone clean a beach, many students just stood around and talked until the time was up.
volunteer work is very popular in the United States(アメリカで人気)は理由と無関係。 I think volunteer work is very important for society(社会にとって大切だ)は例ではなく意見で、しかも主張と逆向き。
Of course, some people argue that required volunteer work gives students experiences they would never choose by themselves.
答えd However, such experiences are more meaningful when students choose them out of their own interest.
(Of course, some people argue …) Therefore, all students should be forced to volunteer(だから全員強制すべき)と This is why volunteer work should be required(だから義務にすべき)は反対意見に乗って立場が逆転する。I like reading books(読書が好き)は無関係。
Of course / It is true that …. However, ….。
答えa For these reasons, I believe volunteer work should be a choice, not a requirement.
正解は For these reasons でまとめ、a choice, not a requirement(義務ではなく選択)と主張を言い直している。In addition, … help students get into good universities(加えて、良い大学に入る助けになる)は新しい理由を足しており、しかも賛成側の内容で構成が崩れる。Volunteer work is said to have begun in the nineteenth century(19世紀に始まったと言われる)は無関係。However, … very useful for all students(しかし全生徒に役立つ)は主張とずれる。
【覚える】結論=For these reasons, I believe+主張の言い換え。 What is the best advice you have ever received?
答えa This advice taught me that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a way to grow.
This advice taught me that …(この助言から〜と学んだ)で、not A but B を使って学びを述べている。My teacher gave me this advice on a rainy Tuesday in June(6月の雨の火曜日に先生がくれた)は細部の説明で学びがない。Many people receive advice from their parents(多くの人は親から助言を受ける)は一般論。Next, I would like to talk about my favorite food(次に好きな食べ物について)は新しい話題で論外。
This experience / advice taught me that …。
- 14Not only it saves time, but it also reduces stress.
答えNot only does it save time, but it also reduces stress.
一般動詞 saves の文なので does it save とし、三単現の -s は does に移るので save は原形に戻す。後半の but it also reduces stress は普通の語順のままでよい。別解:It not only saves time but also reduces stress.(倒置を避けた形)
【覚える】Not only+助動詞+S+V, but (S) also ….(文頭の否定語→倒置)。 - 15Since I was a child, I am interested in space.
答えSince I was a child, I have been interested in space.
since 節の中(I was a child)は過去の一点なので過去形のままでよい。
(I have known him since I was ten.)。 - 16This experience taught me that it is important to listen others.
答えThis experience taught me that it is important to listen to others.
hear は他動詞で to をつけない(hear the news)。This experience taught me that …(この経験から〜と学んだ)は経験型の答案の定番の形なので、ここで listen to のミスをして減点されないようにする。
【覚える】自動詞+前置詞:listen to / look at / wait for / reply to / graduate from。 - 17Many people thinks that technology makes our lives easier.
答えMany people think that technology makes our lives easier.
a people(民族)は単数で別の意味。 - 18I am looking forward to work with people from different countries in the future.
答えI am looking forward to working with people from different countries in the future.
解説look forward to 〜(〜を楽しみに待つ)の to は不定詞ではなく前置詞なので、後ろは名詞か動名詞:look forward to working。 同じく to が前置詞の表現に be used to -ing、object to -ing、when it comes to -ing がある。
【覚える】to が前置詞の表現:look forward to / be used to / object to / when it comes to+-ing。
- 19Do you think it is a good idea for students to take a gap year before entering university? Give reasons and examples.
答えI think taking a gap year before entering university can be a good idea, as long as students have a clear plan for the year. First, a gap year gives students a chance to discover what they really want to study. For example, a student who works at a hospital for a year may realize that she wants to become a nurse, or that medicine is not right for her. As a result, she can choose her major with more confidence. Second, experiences outside school help young people become more independent. Living away from home teaches them how to manage money and solve problems by themselves. Of course, some people worry that students will forget what they learned in high school. However, one year is not too long to catch up. For these reasons, I believe a well-planned gap year is valuable.(142語)
【覚える】as long as S V=〜する限りは(条件つきの主張に便利)。 - 20Describe a time when you failed at something. What did you learn from the experience?
答えLast year, I failed the audition for the lead role in our school play. I had practiced my lines every night, so I was sure I would get the part. When I saw another student's name on the list, I was so disappointed that I almost quit the drama club. However, my teacher told me to watch the rehearsals carefully. As I watched, I noticed that the student who got the role did not just remember her lines; she listened to the other actors and reacted naturally. I realized that I had been focusing only on myself. Since then, I have tried to pay more attention to the people around me, both on stage and in daily life. This experience taught me that failure can show us what we cannot see when things go well.(135語)
①場面(いつ・何に失敗したか)②そのときの気持ちと行動(so disappointed that …)③気づき(I noticed / I realized)④その後の変化(Since then, I have tried to …)⑤学び(This experience taught me that …)。
