[1] My grandfather never owned a map of the city he lived in for sixty years. When I asked him once how he found his way, he laughed and said that he had simply gotten lost so many times that every street had become familiar. At the time I thought this was a joke. Now I suspect it contained a lesson that my generation is in danger of forgetting. [2] Today, few of us ever get truly lost. A phone in our pocket tells us when to turn left and when to turn right, and we arrive at our destination without having noticed much along the way. This is undeniably convenient. ( 1 ), it comes at a price. Researchers who study navigation have found evidence that people who rely heavily on turn-by-turn directions tend to form weaker mental maps of the places they pass through. They reach their goal, but they often cannot explain afterward how they got there. [3] The idea that being lost is simply a waste of time assumes that the only purpose of a journey is to reach its end.(ア) But journeys also teach us things we did not set out to learn: a shortcut through a park, a bakery on a side street, the way the hills shape the flow of traffic. When we are lost, we are forced to pay attention. We read signs, ask strangers for help, and compare what we see with what we remember. In doing so, we build a picture of the city that no screen can give us.(イ) [4] I am not suggesting that we throw away our phones. ( 2 ) I am suggesting is that we occasionally allow ourselves to wander without them, especially in places where little is at stake(ウ). A Sunday afternoon in an unfamiliar neighborhood is the perfect opportunity. My grandfather would walk for hours with his hands in his pockets, ( 3 ) no particular destination in mind. He was, I now realize, not wasting time but investing it.
