[1] For most of us, boredom is something to be avoided at all costs. We reach for our phones the moment a supermarket line stops moving, and parents feel guilty when their children complain that there is nothing to do. Yet a growing body of research suggests that boredom may be less of an enemy than we assume. ( 1 ) it is unpleasant, it may serve a useful purpose. [2] Psychologists now describe boredom as a signal, much like hunger or pain. Hunger tells us that we need food; boredom tells us that what we are doing no longer deserves our attention. Seen in this way(ア), the feeling is not a weakness of character but a red flag(イ) that pushes us to look for goals that matter more to us. In some experiments, people who first spent time on a dull task, such as copying numbers from a list, later produced more creative ideas than people who had not. A mind left without stimulation begins to wander, and this wandering can help us see old problems ( 2 ) a new angle. [3] The trouble is that we rarely give boredom the chance to do its work. Smartphones allow us to fill every empty moment with news, games, and messages. Each distraction is small, but together they may remove the quiet periods in which our thoughts would otherwise drift toward new ideas. What we lose is not time itself but the kind of thinking that only happens when nothing else is demanding our attention.(エ) Some schools have even stepped up(ウ) their efforts to keep students busy every minute of the day, ( 3 ) children have fewer chances to discover what interests them. [4] This does not mean that we should seek out boredom for its own sake. Long periods of boredom, especially when people feel trapped, are linked to stress and unhealthy habits. ( 4 ) this reason, boredom should be treated as information rather than as a goal. When an activity leaves us bored, the best response is not to escape into the nearest screen but to ask what is missing. In the end, (オ) ( is / matters / not / we / what / whether ) feel bored but how we respond to the feeling.
