Imagine walking into a supermarket and finding fifty kinds of jam on the shelf. You might expect that more options would make shoppers happier. In a well-known experiment, however, researchers found the opposite. When a store offered twenty-four kinds of jam for tasting, many people stopped to try them, but very few actually bought any. When only six kinds were offered, fewer people stopped, yet far more of them made a purchase. (1)This suggests that having too many choices can make it harder, not easier, to decide. Psychologists call this phenomenon "choice overload." One reason is that every additional option increases the effort needed to compare. Another is the fear of regret: the more options we (A)forgo, the more likely we are to wonder whether one of them would have been better. (2)It is this worry, rather than the effort itself, that often keeps people from choosing at all. Of course, choice is not a bad thing. The point is that beyond a certain number, more options may leave us less satisfied with whatever we finally pick.
