Many speed-reading courses promise that you can read thousands of words per minute. Research on eye movements, however, suggests that such claims are unrealistic. When we read, our eyes do not move smoothly across a line. Instead, they stop briefly on a word and then jump to another point. These stops, called fixations, usually last between a fifth and a quarter of a second, and we can see clearly only a small area around the point we are looking at. Skilled readers also move their eyes back to earlier words fairly often. Some speed-reading methods tell readers never to do this, but studies have found that when people cannot look back, their understanding of difficult sentences drops. What, then, makes some people read faster than others? The answer lies mainly in language skills, such as a large vocabulary, and knowledge of the topic, rather than in special eye techniques.

Why can some students read English quickly while others struggle? One important factor is how automatically they recognize words. When a reader has to stop and think about the meaning of each word, little mental energy is left for understanding the text as a whole. On the other hand, a reader who recognizes words at a glance can focus on ideas. For this reason, many teachers recommend extensive reading—reading large amounts of easy material without a dictionary. Another useful method is repeated reading, in which students read the same passage several times. It works best with a text whose meaning they have already checked carefully; reading a text they do not understand over and over is far less effective.
