Last year, Ryo started cooking dinner for his family because his mother had begun working late. / Q: Why did Ryo start cooking dinner for his family?
答えd Because his mother had begun working late.
Because his mother has begun By cooking dinner every day Yes, he did.
【覚える】Why→Because S V。 Saki improved her English by watching movies with English subtitles. / Q: How did Saki improve her English?
答えb By watching movies with English subtitles.
【覚える】How(方法)→By -ing。How(様子)→形容詞・副詞。 The town festival has been held every summer for about fifty years. / Q: How long has the festival been held?
答えa For about fifty years.
解説How long(どのくらいの期間)には for+期間で答える。Every summer は How often(どのくらいの頻度で)の答え。In about fifty years は「約50年後に」の意味になる。Since の後には起点(since 1975 など)が来るので since about fifty years は誤り。
【覚える】How long→for+期間/since+起点。How often→every 〜・twice a week。 Ken went to the post office to send a birthday present to his grandmother. / Q: What did Ken go to the post office for?
答えd To send a birthday present to his grandmother.
解説What … for? Because of his grandmother By sending a present At the post office は Where の答え。
【覚える】What … for?=Why(目的)→To do / In order to do。 It was Yui's brother, not Yui, who broke the window. / Q: Who broke the window?
答えd Yui's brother did.
It was 〜, not Yui, who … Yui's brother was は be 動詞で、一般動詞 broke と合わない。
Who is 〜?→名詞+is。 Tom wanted to go to the concert, but he had to stay home because he had a fever. / Q: Did Tom go to the concert?
答えa No, he didn't. He stayed home because he had a fever.
解説Did …? No, he didn't. He stayed home because he had a fever. No, he doesn't Yes, he did は wanted to go(行きたかった)を行った証拠と取り違えた誤り。No, he wasn't は be 動詞で、一般動詞の疑問文に合わない。
Did 〜?→Yes, S did. / No, S didn't. The town built a new library last year. It has become a popular place for students to study. / Q: What does "It" refer to?
答えb It refers to the new library.
【覚える】指示語問題は It refers to 〜. The exam was a piece of cake for Jun; he finished it in twenty minutes. / Q: What does "a piece of cake" mean here?
答えb It means that the exam was very easy for Jun.
Q:ここで "a piece of cake" はどういう意味ですか。
a piece of cake he finished it in twenty minutes(20分で終えた)が根拠。It means that 〜 の型を使う。Jun ate cake(ケーキを食べた)・Jun was hungry(空腹だった)は字面にとらわれた誤り、a small part of the exam(試験の一部)も意味が違う。
【覚える】a piece of cake=very easy。It means that S V. People moved to the city for several reasons, but most of all, they wanted better jobs. / Q: What is the main reason people moved to the city?
答えd The main reason is that they wanted better jobs.
most of all(何よりも)の後が答えなので The main reason is that they wanted better jobs.。 The main reasons are several・Because of several reasons は理由を絞れていない。They moved to the city
The main reason is that S V. /most of all・above all の後が答え。
I was too nervous to speak at the meeting. / Q: Why didn't the author speak at the meeting?
答えa Because the author was too nervous to speak.
Because the author is 〜 は過去の質問に現在形で答えている。By being too nervous は方法の形で Why に合わない。too 〜 to do(〜すぎて…
【覚える】本文の I・we → the author / the writer に直して答える。 Because the bridge was damaged by the storm, the town had to close it for three months. / Q: Why did the town close the bridge?
答えc Because the storm had damaged it.
Because the storm had damaged it.。受け身 was damaged by the storm を能動にしても意味は同じ。Because it was closed for three months To repair the storm For three months は How long の答え。
When I was a child, my grandmother gave me a small box. She told me to open it only when I felt lonely. / Q: What did the author's grandmother tell the author to do?
答えd She told the author to open the box only when the author felt lonely.
解説me・I→the author、it→the box She told me to 〜 は代名詞のままで減点。when she felt lonely は she が祖母を指してしまい「祖母が寂しいとき」と意味が変わる。 only(〜だけ)も落とさないこと。
tell 人 to do。 Yuki was late for school because her train stopped for an hour after an accident. / Q: In about 10 words, explain why Yuki was late.
答えa She was late because her train stopped after an accident.
She was late because her train stopped after an accident.(10語)だけ。The train stopped. Yuki was late for school this morning … Late.
When I was fifteen, my family moved from Osaka to a small town in Canada. I could read English fairly well, but I could hardly understand what my classmates said. For the first few weeks, I ate lunch alone in the library because I was afraid of making mistakes. One day, a girl named Leah sat down next to me and asked what I was reading. It was a Japanese comic book. To my surprise, she said she loved Japanese comics and had been trying to learn Japanese for a year. We agreed to teach each other: I helped her with Japanese, and she helped me with English. By the end of the school year, I was talking with my classmates without thinking about grammar. Looking back, I realize that I did not need perfect English to make friends. I needed the courage to share what I loved.

- 14Why did the author eat lunch alone in the library at first?
答えThe author ate lunch alone in the library because he or she was afraid of making mistakes (in English).
解説根拠は本文3文目の because I was afraid of making mistakes。採点ポイントは、Why→because 節、過去形 was、I→the author(he or she)に直すこと。 I was afraid …
I→the author, my→his or her。 - 15What was the author reading when Leah first spoke to the author?
答えThe author was reading a Japanese comic book.
It was a Japanese comic book.。 A Japanese comic book.
- 16How long had Leah been trying to learn Japanese when she met the author?
答えShe had been trying to learn Japanese for a year.
解説根拠は had been trying to learn Japanese for a year。採点ポイントは、How long→期間 for a year と、質問の過去完了進行形 had been trying をそのまま使うこと。本文の she said she … Since a year は誤り。
【覚える】How long→for+期間。 - 17How did the author and Leah help each other?
答えThe author helped Leah with Japanese, and Leah helped the author with English./They helped each other by teaching each other their own languages.
I helped her with Japanese, and she helped me with English.。 By teaching each other their own languages(方法)の形も可。
each other=互いに。 - 18What did the author realize? Answer in your own words.
答えThe author realized that being brave enough to share his or her interests mattered more than speaking perfect English.
did not need perfect English を more than speaking perfect English のように比較で表すのも可。
【覚える】in your own words=品詞・語句を言い換える(courage→be brave)。
Every morning, my father made me clean my room. He always said that this habit would make me a better person. / Q: What did the author's father always say? He always said that this habit would make me a better person.
答えHe always said that cleaning the author's room every morning would make the author a better person.
this habit→具体的な習慣(cleaning the author's room every morning)、me→the author に直す。
【覚える】指示語(this, that, it)と I・me は答案では具体化する。 The students sold handmade cookies at the school festival to raise money for their trip to Kyoto. / Q: How did the students raise money for the trip? Because they wanted to go to Kyoto.
答えBy selling handmade cookies at the school festival./They raised money by selling handmade cookies at the school festival.
By selling handmade cookies at the school festival.(完全な文なら They raised money by 〜)。 Because they wanted to go to Kyoto.
【覚える】How→By -ing(方法)、Why→Because / To do(理由・目的)。 She decided to give up her dream of becoming a pilot. / Q: What did she decide? Answer in your own words. She decided to give up her dream of becoming a pilot.
答えShe made the decision to stop pursuing her dream of being a pilot.
decide→make the decision(品詞の転換)、give up→stop pursuing、becoming→being など、同じ意味の語に替える。
【覚える】言い換えの技:品詞を変える(decide→make a decision)・同義語(give up→abandon)。
