Will robots and AI take our jobs? One well-known study in 2013 estimated that about 47 percent of jobs in the United States were at high risk of automation. A later study, however, came to a very different conclusion. Instead of looking at whole occupations, its authors looked at the individual tasks that make up each job. They found that only about 9 percent of jobs in OECD countries were at high risk, because most jobs include tasks that machines cannot easily do. The difference shows that such estimates depend heavily on how they are calculated. Many researchers now believe that AI is more likely to change the content of jobs than to replace them entirely.

- 1Why did the later study reach a different conclusion?
答えa It examined individual tasks rather than whole occupations.
Instead of looking at whole occupations, its authors looked at the individual tasks を、examined individual tasks rather than whole occupations と言い換えている(instead of A, B=B rather than A)。studied only jobs in the United States(米国だけ)は対象が OECD 諸国で×。carried out before the 2013 study(2013年より前)は later と矛盾。used data from robots
【覚える】instead of A, B=B rather than A=not A but B。
答えa The results can vary greatly depending on the method used.
解説depend heavily on 〜=〜に大きく左右される、how they are calculated=計算の仕方(方法)。The results can vary greatly depending on the method used(方法によって結果が大きく変わりうる)が言い換え。 always too high(常に高すぎる)は言い過ぎ。based mainly on guesses by workers(労働者の推測)は本文にない。too difficult for most people(難しすぎる)は話がずれる。
【覚える】depend on 〜=vary depending on 〜=〜次第で変わる。 - 3Which of the following agrees with the passage?
答えd Many researchers think AI will mainly change what workers do.
AI is more likely to change the content of jobs than to replace them entirely を、change what workers do と言い換えている。47 percent of jobs will disappear が certain(確実)は、推計(estimated)の言い過ぎ。most jobs were at high risk Machines can now easily do all the tasks
【覚える】more likely to A than to B=B より A の可能性が高い。

When you use social media or a news app, an algorithm decides what you see. It learns from what you click, like, and share, and then shows you more of the same. This may seem convenient, but it can also trap you in a "filter bubble," a term popularized by the writer Eli Pariser in 2011. Inside the bubble, you rarely encounter opinions that differ from your own, so your views may become more extreme without your noticing. Some researchers, however, point out that people also choose to follow those who agree with them, so algorithms are not the only cause.

- 4According to the passage, how does the algorithm decide what to show you?
答えb It uses information about what you have done before.
It learns from what you click, like, and share(クリック・いいね・共有の履歴から学ぶ)を、uses information about what you have done before と言い換えている。news chosen by professional editors(編集者が選ぶ)と at random(無作為)は本文にない。opinions that differ from yours(違う意見を見せる)は本文と逆。
答えb without your being aware of it
your は動名詞 noticing の意味上の主語で、without your noticing=あなたが気づかないうちに=without your being aware of it。 without any information(情報なしに)、without other people's help(他人の助けなしに)は意味が違う。
- 6What do some researchers point out?
答えd Users' own choices also help create the bubble.
解説people also choose to follow those who agree with them, so algorithms are not the only cause を、Users' own choices also help create the bubble Algorithms are the only cause(唯一の原因)は本文と逆。do not exist at all(存在しない)は言い過ぎ。
【覚える】not the only cause=原因は1つではない。
Large language models, the technology behind many chatbots, produce text by predicting which word is likely to come next, based on huge amounts of training data. Their answers can sound natural and confident. However, they sometimes produce statements that are completely false, a problem known as "hallucination." Because the errors are mixed with correct information and written in the same confident style, they can be hard to notice. For this reason, many teachers say that students should treat AI as a tool for thinking, not as a substitute for it, and should always check important facts with reliable sources.

- 7According to the passage, how do large language models produce text?
答えa By predicting which word is likely to come next
解説本文の by predicting which word is likely to come next がそのまま正解。By understanding the meaning of every sentence as humans do(人間のように意味を理解して)は、AIについてのよくある誤解。By copying one website at a time(サイトを1つずつ写す)、By asking human experts(専門家に聞く)は本文にない。
- 8Why can hallucinations be hard to notice?
答えa They appear among correct information and sound confident.
Because the errors are mixed with correct information and written in the same confident style を言い換えたもの(mixed with=appear among)。in a different style(違う書き方)は本文と逆。only in very long answers(長い答えだけ)、hidden … on purpose(わざと隠す)は本文にない。
【覚える】hallucination=AIがもっともらしい誤りを出すこと。
答えb replacement for
解説substitute for 〜=〜の代わり=replacement for 〜。「AIは考えるための道具(a tool for thinking)であって、考えることの代わり(a substitute for it)ではない」という対比。reason for(〜の理由)、reward for(〜への報酬)、rule for(〜の規則)は対比の文脈に合わない。
【覚える】substitute for=replacement for。substitute A for B=B の代わりに A を使う。 - 10What do many teachers advise students to do?
答えa Check important facts with reliable sources
解説should always check important facts with reliable sources と一致する。 Trust AI because it sounds confident(自信があるから信じる)は本文の警告と逆。Use AI only for writing essays(作文だけに使う)は本文にない。
A survey found that teenagers who spend more time on social media tend to report more anxiety. Some people conclude from this that social media causes anxiety. However, this kind of survey shows only a correlation. It is also possible that anxious teenagers turn to social media more often, or that a third factor, such as lack of sleep, affects both.

- 11What is the writer's main point?
答えa A link between two things does not prove that one causes the other.
However, this kind of survey shows only a correlation(相関しか示さない)が主張の中心で、逆の因果や第3の要因の可能性を挙げている。Social media is the main cause of anxiety Teenagers should stop using social media(使用をやめるべき)は述べていない。
【覚える】correlation(相関)≠ causation(因果)。 - 12Which is mentioned as a possible "third factor"?
答えd lack of sleep
解説本文に a third factor, such as lack of sleep, affects both とある。 the price of smartphones(スマホの値段)、school exams(学校の試験)、family income(家庭の収入)は本文に出てこない。
【覚える】such as 〜=例えば〜。
- 13The video of the politician was a created with AI; he never actually said those words.
解説deepfake=AIで顔や声を合成した偽の映像・音声。never actually said those words(実際には言っていない)がヒント。hallucination(ハルシネーション)はAIの文章の誤りを指すことが多く、動画の偽造ではない。filter bubble(フィルターバブル)と digital divide(デジタル格差)は意味が合わない。
- 14He shared a false news story without knowing it was untrue. This is an example of .
without knowing it was untrue(うそと知らずに)なので misinformation。 surveillance(監視)と automation(自動化)は意味が合わない。
- 15Everything you post online leaves a digital that may be difficult to erase.
digital divide(デジタル格差)、bubble(バブル)、literacy(リテラシー)は「投稿が残す〜」とつながらない。
- 16The gap between people who can use the internet well and those who cannot is called the digital .
footprint(足跡)、chamber(部屋:echo chamber)、bias(偏り)は「格差」の意味にならない。
gap between A and B=A と B の差。 - 17Because the training data contained mostly men's résumés, the hiring system showed against women.
literacy(読み解く力)、automation(自動化)、surveillance(監視)は against women とつながらない。
- 18As machines take over routine tasks, many workers will need to learn new skills.
解説reskilling=新しい技能の学び直し。take over routine tasks(決まった作業を引き継ぐ)→人間は新しい技能が必要、の流れに合う。surveillance(監視)、hallucination(AIの誤り)、cyberbullying(ネットいじめ)は文脈に合わない。upskilling(今の技能の向上)との違いも押さえる。
- 19Schools should teach media so that students can judge information critically.
so that students can judge information critically(批判的に判断できるように)と合う。bias(偏り)、divide(格差)、economy(経済)は「教えるべきもの」として意味が通らない。
Technology itself is neither good nor bad; it depends on how we use it.
解説採点ポイントは①neither A nor B(AでもBでもない)②it depends on how we use it(使い方次第だ)③itself で「技術そのもの」を強めているか。別解:Technology in itself is not good or bad; it all depends on how it is used. / Whether technology is good or bad depends on how we use it. ①は not either good or bad でも可。
【覚える】neither A nor B/It depends on how 〜=AI・SNSの英作文の結論で使える万能文。
