The Return of the Beaver / Beavers were once common across much of Britain, but they were hunted to extinction there by the sixteenth century, mainly for their fur. In recent decades, several projects have reintroduced beavers to rivers in England and Scotland. Beavers build dams from branches and mud, creating ponds that hold water during heavy rain. Researchers studying one reintroduction site in south-west England found that, after the beavers arrived, the amount of water flowing downstream during storms was noticeably reduced, which may lower the risk of flooding in nearby villages. The ponds also provide habitats for insects, frogs and birds. However, not everyone welcomes the animals. Some farmers complain that beaver dams flood their fields, and in a few areas the government allows dams to be removed under licence. Supporters argue that farmers should receive financial compensation for any damage, rather than the beavers being moved.

Many schools now give every student a tablet computer, and some educators claim that this will transform learning. In my view, such claims are exaggerated. Tablets are useful for certain tasks, such as searching for information quickly, but there is little evidence that they improve reading comprehension. Indeed, I believe that students who read long texts on paper tend to understand them more deeply. This does not mean that schools should ban devices; rather, teachers should decide when technology genuinely helps. It is often said that tablets reduce costs because schools no longer need to buy textbooks, but this argument ignores the expense of repairs and software.
