WPM = 語数 ÷ 読むのにかかった秒数 × 60 × 正解数 ÷ 設問数
※読んだ内容の理解を測定せずただ英文を読むスピードをチェックしたい場合は、WPM = 語数 ÷ 読むのにかかった秒数 × 60 まででOK。
Friendship Beats Genes: Lessons from an 80-Year Harvard Study
For more than eight decades, Harvard scientists have followed hundreds of lives to learn what really keeps us healthy and happy. The project began in 1938 with 268 male students, including a young John F. Kennedy. Later it grew to include poor Boston youths, their wives, and over 1,300 children.
The answer is clear: close relationships, not money, fame, or lucky DNA, give the best protection against illness and sadness. Men satisfied with their friendships and marriages at 50 were the healthiest at 80. Even on painful days, happily married elders stayed in better moods, while lonely people declined faster. Psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, the study’s fourth director, warns, “Loneliness kills. It is as dangerous as smoking or heavy drinking.”
Good habits still matter. Participants who exercised, stayed at a healthy weight, and avoided alcohol abuse lived longer. Yet social bonds magnified the power of each habit. Earlier director George Vaillant listed six keys to aging well: activity, moderate drinking, no smoking, stable weight, mature coping skills, and, above all, a loving network.
The lesson is simple but demanding. We must care for our bodies as if we will need them for a century, and we must invest daily in friends and family. A rough childhood or job stress can still harm the body later, but warmth and empathy can repair much of the damage. Healthy aging, researchers conclude, is built on relationships, relationships, relationships. Joy, therefore, is serious medicine for everyone. (250words)
