How to make an origami HakamaはかまHakama

Hakama are wide pleated pants from old Japan, and these ones are for your Yakko-san. Start like Yakko-san with three blintz folds, squash the top and bottom pockets, then pull out the hidden triangles to make two legs.

How to fold

Fold in half both ways and unfold.

Fold all four corners to the center. This is the blintz fold.

    Turn it over.

Fold the four corners to the center again.

    Turn it over.

Fold the four corners to the center one more time.

Turn it over. You can see four small squares.

Put your finger into the top square pocket, open it, and squash it flat into a rectangle. This is the waist of the hakama.

Squash the bottom square into a rectangle in the same way.

    Fold the bottom half behind.

Pull the hidden triangles on the left and right down from behind. Open them out to make the two legs.

Finished! Your hakama is finished! Slide the bottom of your Yakko-san into the slit at the top of the hakama so he can wear them.
