The Great Buddha at Kōtokuin in Kamakura is a bronze statue of Amida Buddha. It is a National Treasure. The statue is about 11.3 meters tall and weighs about 121 tons. This photo was made in Kamakura between 1890 and 1894. It is attributed to the workshop of Kusakabe Kimbei, a photographer based in Yokohama. The black-and-white photo was colored by hand. Such photos were popular souvenirs for foreign travelers.
According to the old history book Azuma Kagami, a wooden Great Buddha was made first. Casting of the bronze Buddha began in 1252. A monk named Jōkō is said to have collected money from many people. The statue once sat inside a hall. Storms damaged the hall, and since the late 15th century the Buddha has sat outdoors. Some say a tsunami in 1498 washed the hall away.
The base was damaged in the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, but it was repaired. In a later repair, engineers added a way for the statue to slide a little during earthquakes. Visitors can still go inside the statue during opening hours all year round. It is the symbol of Kamakura, and many people visit every year. For more than 770 years, the Buddha has watched over people here.
