顔のアップで美人画を変えた浮世絵の名人He changed beauty prints with big close-up faces.
生まれた場所や年ははっきりしていません。版元（出版社）の蔦屋重三郎に才能を見いだされ、女性の上半身や顔を大きく描く「大首絵」で大人気になりました。背景に雲母（きら）の粉をまいてキラキラさせるなど、ぜいたくな刷りも特徴です。表情やしぐさから、その人の性格や気持ちまで伝わってくるような美人画を描きました。
We do not know exactly where or when Utamaro was born. The publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō discovered his talent. Utamaro became hugely popular for ōkubi-e, close-up pictures of women's faces and upper bodies. Some prints used sparkling mica powder in the background. His women's faces and gestures seem to show their personalities and feelings.
歌麿は1788年、虫や小さな生き物を細かく描いた絵本『画本虫撰』をつくりました。トンボの羽のすじまで描きこまれていて、観察力の高さがわかります。
In 1788, Utamaro made Picture Book of Selected Insects, with detailed drawings of insects and small creatures. Even the veins of dragonfly wings are shown, proving his sharp eye.
1804年、歌麿は豊臣秀吉をテーマにした浮世絵を出して幕府に罰せられ、50日間手錠をかけられて家にいる刑を受けました。その2年後に亡くなっています。
In 1804, Utamaro was punished by the shogunate for prints about Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He had to stay at home in handcuffs for 50 days. He died two years later.
