The standard explanation

Yamanba, also read yamauba, is a mountain woman from Japanese folk tales and legends. She usually looks like a wild old woman with long, messy hair. In many stories, she tries to eat travelers or children who wander into the mountains. But in other stories she's a kind of mother figure, like in the legend of Kintaro, the strong boy she is said to have raised.

Yamanba is one of the most famous characters in Japanese folk tales. The name means "mountain old woman," and she's usually pictured with long, wild hair, ragged clothes and a mouth that can open very wide. In many stories, she lives alone in a hut deep in the mountains and invites lost travelers in for the night, only to try to eat them.

In one well-known tale, a young monk escapes from her by throwing three magic charms behind him as he runs. But yamanba isn't always a monster. In the legend of Kintaro, a super-strong boy who wrestles bears, she's said to be the woman who raised him on Mount Ashigara.

There's even a Noh play about her, in which she's a lonely spirit who wanders the mountains through the seasons. I find her interesting because she shows how people once saw the mountains: as a place that was both dangerous and full of life. Her name was also borrowed around 2000 for a Shibuya fashion style with very dark tans and white makeup.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

Is yamanba the same as a Western witch?

Not quite. Yamanba doesn't use spells or fly on a broom. She's more like a wild spirit of the mountains, sometimes a monster and sometimes a helper. "Mountain witch" is just the easiest way to explain her in English.

Q

What's the story of the three charms?

A young monk goes into the mountains, stays the night at an old woman's house and realizes she's a yamanba. He runs away and throws three charms from his temple behind him, which turn into things like a river or a mountain to slow her down. In the end, his head priest outsmarts her.

Q

Why was a fashion style named after her?

Around 2000, some young women in Shibuya combined very dark tans with white makeup around the eyes and bleached hair. People thought the look resembled the wild yamanba of picture books, and the name stuck.
