The standard explanation

Teiki shokyu, or teisho for short, is a pay raise that comes at a set time every year under a company's rules. Many Japanese companies have a pay scale based on things like age, years of service and job grade, and each year employees move up a step. It is different from a base-up, which raises the whole pay scale. In 2026, about 84 percent of companies with 100 or more employees had a regular raise system.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Teiki shokyu means a regular pay raise that happens at the same time every year under a company's rules. Many Japanese companies decide pay using a table, based on things such as education, age, years of service and job grade. Each year, employees move one step up that table, so their pay rises a little.

This is different from a base-up, where the company rewrites the table itself and raises pay for everyone at the same level. The difference matters. If a company only gives regular raises, each person earns more than last year, but a worker at a given age and grade earns the same as someone at that age and grade did the year before.

Only a base-up lifts the overall level. According to a 2026 government survey of companies with 100 or more employees, about 84 percent had a regular raise system. Today, many companies also use job evaluations, so not everyone moves up by the same amount. When I hear about wage increases in the news, I try to check which kind of raise they mean.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

Q

So does everyone's salary go up every year in Japan?

At companies with a regular raise system, most employees get a small raise each year. But it depends on the company's rules, and many now link the raise to job evaluations. Smaller companies and non-regular workers may not have this system at all.

Q

What's the difference between teisho and a base-up?

Teisho moves you one step up the company's pay table. A base-up rewrites the table, so everyone at the same step gets more. In the spring wage talks, unions usually report the base-up part separately.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHIf the news says wages rose 4 percent, everyone's pay went up 4 percent.

FACTThat figure is an average, and it usually includes regular yearly raises as well as any base-up. Individual raises can be bigger or smaller.
