1One day, a woman who worked for the city was watching cyclists on a busy road. They were riding very close to the cars, and it looked dangerous. She told her colleague that the city needed to build bike lanes on the road. 2A few months later, workers were painting blue bike lanes along the side of the road. A sign showing a bicycle was also put up next to the lanes. The woman watched the work with a satisfied look. 3The next spring, many people were riding their bicycles to work in the new lanes. They no longer had to worry about cars passing close to them. The woman was glad to see that more people had started cycling. 4A few months later, however, delivery trucks were often parked in the bike lanes. Cyclists had to ride around them into the traffic, which was even more dangerous. The woman looked frustrated as she watched the scene.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the woman, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "We only painted lines on the road, and that wasn't enough. We should have separated the bike lanes from the cars with barriers."
I'd be thinking, "The delivery trucks need somewhere to stop, too. I'll talk with the delivery companies and create special loading areas for them."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think more people should ride bicycles instead of driving cars?
Yes, I think so. Riding a bicycle is good for both people's health and the environment. Cyclists get regular exercise, and they do not produce any carbon dioxide. For short trips, like going to a station or a supermarket, a bicycle is often just as fast as a car because cyclists do not have to look for a parking space.
No.3Should all cyclists be required to wear helmets?
Yes, I think they should. Cyclists are often seriously injured in accidents, and many deaths are caused by head injuries. A helmet can greatly reduce this risk. Although some people think helmets are uncomfortable or unfashionable, there are now many light and stylish ones. Safety should come first, especially for children and elderly people.
No.4Today, people often discuss how local governments make their decisions. Do you think local governments listen enough to residents' opinions?
No, I don't think so. Many important decisions are made without enough discussion with the people who live in the area. For example, residents sometimes learn about new construction projects only after they have already started. Local governments should use online surveys and public meetings more often so that more people can share their ideas.
