1One day, a restaurant owner was looking at a lot of leftover food in the kitchen. He told the chef that it was a waste to throw it all away. He decided to sell the leftover food at a discount just before closing time. 2A week later, the restaurant started selling unsold dishes at half price after 8 p.m. Customers found out about the discount on an app and came to buy the food. 3A few months later, the restaurant was throwing away much less food. The owner was proud that he was helping the environment. Even the chef was surprised at how quickly the dishes sold out. 4Six months later, however, the restaurant was almost empty in the early evening. A long line of people was waiting outside for the discount to start at 8 p.m. The owner looked at the sales figures with a worried expression.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the owner, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "People are just waiting for the discount instead of paying full price. I should have offered fewer discounted dishes."
I'd be thinking, "It's good that we're wasting less food, but we also need to make a profit. I'll try cooking smaller amounts so that there are fewer leftovers."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think people in Japan waste too much food?
Yes, I think so. Japan throws away millions of tons of food every year, even though much of it is still safe to eat. For example, supermarkets often throw away food that is close to its best-before date, and many families buy more than they need. People should plan their shopping better and use leftovers creatively.
No.3Should supermarkets be required to donate unsold food?
Yes, I think they should. Supermarkets throw away large amounts of food that is still safe to eat, while some people cannot afford enough food. If supermarkets gave this food to food banks, it would help families in need and reduce waste at the same time. France already has a law like this, so Japan could learn from it.
No.4Today, Japan imports a large amount of its food from other countries. Do you think Japan should produce more of its own food?
Yes, I think so. In terms of calories, Japan imports more than half of its food, so it depends heavily on other countries. If there were a war or a poor harvest abroad, food prices could rise sharply. Supporting young farmers and using new technology, such as drones and robots, could help Japan grow more food at home.
