1One day, a company president was making an announcement to his employees. He said that they would work only four days a week from the next month. The employees were very excited to hear the news. 2The next month, one of the employees went fishing with his son on a Friday. They had a wonderful time together by the lake, and the man thought that the new system was a great idea. 3A few weeks later, the president was looking at a report on his computer. It showed that the employees were working more efficiently than before. The company's sales had not gone down at all, and he looked pleased. 4Three months later, the employee was fishing with his son again on a Friday. However, a client called him and complained that nobody was answering the phone at the office. The man looked annoyed, and his son looked disappointed.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the man, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "Our clients still work on Fridays, so this was bound to happen. The company should have kept a few staff members in the office on Fridays."
I'd be thinking, "I'll deal with this call quickly and enjoy the rest of the day with my son. Then I'll suggest a rotation system for Fridays at the next meeting."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think a four-day workweek will become common in Japan?
No, I don't think so. Many Japanese companies, especially small ones, do not have enough workers, so it would be difficult for them to close for an extra day. Also, customers expect businesses to be available five days a week. Some large companies may try it, but I don't think it will become the standard soon.
No.3Should companies allow their employees to work from home more often?
Yes, I think they should. Working from home saves employees the time and stress of commuting on crowded trains. They can use that extra time to rest or take care of their children. Many people also find that they can concentrate better at home because there are fewer interruptions than in a busy office.
No.4Today, many industries in Japan are facing a shortage of workers. Do you think Japanese companies should hire more workers from overseas?
Yes, I think so. Japan's population is getting smaller, and industries such as nursing care and construction already have serious labor shortages. Workers from overseas can fill these jobs and bring new ideas and skills. However, companies also need to provide language support and fair working conditions so that these workers can live comfortably in Japan.
