1One day, a café owner was talking with her staff after closing time. She told them that she wanted to stop accepting cash. She thought that it would save them a lot of time counting money at the end of each day. 2The next month, the café put up a sign saying that it accepted only cashless payments. Young customers paid quickly with their smartphones, and the lines became much shorter. 3A few weeks later, the owner was able to finish her work early because she no longer had to count cash. She left the café with a smile on her face. Her staff members were also happy to go home early. 4Three months later, an elderly regular customer came to the café with his wallet. However, he turned around and left after seeing the sign. The owner looked sad because many of her older customers had stopped coming.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the owner, what would you be thinking?

反省型

I'd be thinking, "I didn't think about my older customers. I should have kept accepting cash for people who don't use smartphones."

I'd be thinking, "I don't want to lose my regular customers. I'll put up a new sign saying that we accept cash again."

No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)

No.2Do you think Japan should become a completely cashless society?

No, I don't think so. Cashless payments are convenient, but not everyone can use them easily. For example, some elderly people do not have smartphones or credit cards, and children often use cash to learn how to manage money. In addition, cashless systems may not work during power outages after a natural disaster, so cash is still necessary.

No.3Do you think enough is being done to help elderly people use new technology?

No, I don't think so. Many services, such as banking and booking tickets, are moving online, but elderly people often get little help learning to use them. Some local governments hold smartphone classes, but there are not enough of them. More support is needed so that older people are not left behind in their daily lives.

No.4Today, more and more people are shopping on the internet. Do you think online shopping will cause many local stores to close?

Yes, I think so. Online shopping is cheaper and more convenient for many people because they can buy almost anything from home. As a result, local stores are losing customers, and some shopping streets already have many closed shops. Unless these stores offer something special, such as friendly service or local products, it will be hard for them to survive.
