1One day, a man from an astronomy club was talking to the mayor of his town. He suggested turning off the streetlights for one night. He said that everyone would be able to see the Milky Way clearly. 2On the night of the event, many families came to the park to look at the stars. Children were looking through telescopes, and the man was explaining the constellations to them. 3The next week, the mayor decided to hold the event every month because it had been so popular. The man shook hands with the mayor and felt very proud of his idea. 4A few months later, however, some residents came to complain to the man. An elderly woman had fallen on a dark street and injured her arm. They said that it was too dangerous to walk outside without streetlights, and the man looked troubled.
No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the man, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "I only thought about how beautiful the stars were. I should have thought more about the safety of people who need to go out at night."
I'd be thinking, "We can still enjoy the stars without turning off every light. Maybe we can keep the lights on along the main streets and hold the event only in the park."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think children today have enough chances to experience nature?
No, I don't think so. Many children live in cities and spend most of their free time indoors, playing video games or studying. For example, some children have never seen a firefly or a sky full of stars. Schools and local communities should organize more outdoor activities, such as camping trips, so that children can learn about nature directly.
No.3Should cities reduce the amount of lighting at night to save energy?
Yes, I think they should, as long as safety is not affected. Many buildings and advertising signs stay brightly lit all night, even when nobody is around. For example, cities could turn off billboard lights after midnight or use sensors that switch on streetlights only when people pass by. This would save a lot of energy and also protect wildlife.
No.4In recent years, many countries have been spending large amounts of money on space exploration. Do you think Japan should work with other countries on space projects rather than act alone?
Yes, I think so. Space projects are extremely expensive, so sharing the cost with other countries makes them more realistic. For example, the International Space Station was built and is run by many countries working together. Cooperation also allows scientists to share knowledge, and it helps build trust between countries.
