1One day, a young woman was preparing to open a new shop. It was a refill shop where customers could bring their own containers. She told her friend that she wanted to reduce plastic waste. 2On the opening day, a long line of customers formed in front of the shop. They filled their own bottles and bags with things like detergent and nuts, and the woman was delighted. 3A few weeks later, many people were posting photos of the shop on social media. A TV station also came to report on it, and the woman felt that her idea was a success. 4Six months later, however, there were hardly any customers in the shop. Many people found it troublesome to bring containers, so they went to the supermarket across the street instead. The woman looked very worried as she checked the falling sales.
No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the woman, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "People like the idea of reducing waste, but they care more about convenience. I should have thought about how to make shopping here easier."
I'd be thinking, "I could lend containers to customers who forget theirs. I'll also try selling some products online to reach more people."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think people in Japan are willing to pay more for eco-friendly products?
No, I don't think most people are. Many people say that they care about the environment, but when they actually go shopping, they usually choose the cheapest product. For example, eco-friendly detergents and reusable containers are often more expensive, so only a small number of people buy them. Prices need to come down before such products become popular.
No.3Is it better to shop at small local stores than at large supermarkets?
Yes, I think so, at least sometimes. Small local stores often sell products from nearby farms and makers, and the staff know a lot about what they sell. For example, the owner of a local bakery can tell customers how the bread was made and remember their favorite items. Supporting such stores also helps keep the town lively, even if prices are slightly higher.
No.4These days, the amount of plastic waste in the ocean is a serious problem. Should single-use plastic products be banned?
Yes, I think they should be, as long as there are good alternatives. Plastic waste harms sea animals and can take hundreds of years to break down. Some countries have already banned plastic straws and bags, and people there have gotten used to using paper or reusable products. If governments act together, the amount of plastic in the ocean could be greatly reduced.
