1One day, a family was visiting an animal shelter. A staff member told them that many dogs there needed new homes. The daughter found a brown dog she liked and asked her parents if they could take him home. 2The next weekend, the family brought the dog home. The daughter hugged him happily, and her father put together a bed for him in the living room. 3A few weeks later, the family took the dog for a walk in the park. He was wagging his tail and seemed to be enjoying his new life. The mother took pictures of them on her smartphone. 4A month later, however, the mother came home from work and found a neighbor waiting for her. The neighbor complained that the dog barked all day while the family was out. The dog had also damaged the sofa, and the mother looked shocked.
No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the mother, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "We didn't think enough about how long the dog would be alone every day. Adopting a dog is a bigger responsibility than I expected."
I'd be thinking, "We need to find a way to help our dog feel less lonely. I'll ask a dog trainer for advice and look for a pet sitter for weekdays."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think keeping a pet is good for children?
Yes, I think so. Taking care of a pet teaches children to be responsible, because animals need food, exercise and attention every day. Children can also learn about life and death through their pets. For example, a child who walks the family dog every morning may become more patient and kinder to others.
No.3Should pet shops stop selling dogs and cats?
Yes, I think so. Pet shops make it too easy for people to buy animals on impulse, without thinking about the responsibility. Meanwhile, many dogs and cats in shelters are waiting for new homes. For example, in some places overseas, pet shops are only allowed to offer animals from shelters. If Japan did the same, fewer animals would be abandoned.
No.4These days, many pets are abandoned by owners who can no longer take care of them. Should the government do more to stop people from abandoning pets?
Yes, I think it should. Many people buy pets without thinking about the cost and time needed to care for them. For example, the government could require people to take a short course before buying a pet, or it could give heavier punishments to people who abandon animals. These measures would reduce the number of animals that suffer.
