1One day, a woman was giving a presentation at her town office. She suggested providing free Wi-Fi in the square in front of the station. She explained that it would bring more young people to the town center. 2A few months later, free Wi-Fi was available in the square. Tourists were checking maps on their smartphones, and students were studying on their laptops. The woman was glad to see that nearby shops were getting more customers too. 3That summer, the square was crowded with young people until late at night. They were sitting on the ground, playing games on their phones and talking loudly. 4A few weeks later, some elderly residents came to the town office to complain. They told the woman that they could not sleep because of the noise at night. The woman apologized to them and looked very troubled.

No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the woman, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "I didn't think carefully enough about the people who live near the square. I should have talked with them before starting the project."
I'd be thinking, "The free Wi-Fi itself is a good idea, but we need some rules. Maybe we can turn it off late at night so that residents can sleep."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think it is safe to use free public Wi-Fi?
No, I don't think it is always safe. Free networks are often not well protected, so other people may be able to steal personal information. For example, it is risky to log in to an online bank or enter a credit card number while using public Wi-Fi. It is fine for checking maps or the news, but people should be careful.
No.3Should there be stricter rules about how people use public spaces such as parks and squares?
Yes, I think there should. Public spaces are shared by everyone, so a small group of people should not be allowed to cause trouble for others. For example, loud noise late at night can disturb people living nearby, and litter makes the area unpleasant for everyone. Clear rules, such as quiet hours, would help everyone enjoy these places.
No.4Today, people often discuss how to make towns attractive places to live. Do you think good internet access is now as important as roads and public transportation?
Yes, I think so. Today, many people rely on the internet for work, school and even medical care. For example, people who work from home or take online classes cannot do so without a stable connection. If a town does not have good internet access, young people and companies may not want to move there, so it is just as important as roads.
