1One day, the manager of a hotel was talking with his staff. He suggested that the hotel use robots at the front desk. He said that the robots could check guests in 24 hours a day, so the staff would not have to work so many night shifts. 2A month later, two robots were working at the front desk. A young couple checked in quickly by using a touch screen, and they enjoyed taking photos with the robots. The manager was pleased to see that guests liked the new system. 3A few months later, the manager reduced the number of front desk staff from six to two. He was happy because the hotel was saving a lot of money on labor costs. 4During the summer holidays, however, a large tour group arrived at the hotel. A long line formed in front of the robots, and an elderly man could not make a robot understand his question. The guests were getting angry, and the manager looked very worried.
No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the manager, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "I shouldn't have cut so many front desk staff. Robots can't deal with busy days or guests who need special help."
I'd be thinking, "We need human staff working alongside the robots. From now on, I'll make sure there are enough people at the front desk during busy seasons."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think more hotels and restaurants in Japan will use robots in the future?
Yes, I think so. Japan is facing a serious shortage of workers, especially in the service industry. Robots can do simple tasks such as carrying food to tables or cleaning rooms, which allows human staff to focus on serving customers. In fact, many family restaurants already use robots to deliver dishes, and this trend is likely to continue.
No.3Should hotels charge higher prices during busy seasons?
Yes, I think they should. When many people want to stay at the same time, higher prices help hotels control the number of guests and pay staff for the extra work. For example, room prices during Golden Week are often much higher than in June. Travelers who want to save money can choose quieter seasons, which also spreads tourists more evenly over the year.
No.4These days, many companies are introducing robots to make up for a lack of workers. Should the government give companies financial support to introduce robots?
No, I don't think so. Companies that use robots will save money on labor costs, so they should pay for the robots themselves. Instead, the government could spend public money on training workers or improving working conditions in industries such as nursing care. Making jobs more attractive would be a better long-term solution to the shortage of workers.
