1One day, a basketball coach was talking with his team in the gym. He showed them a tablet and said that they should use data to improve their performance. Each player was given a special device to wear on their arm. 2A few weeks later, the coach was checking each player's data on the tablet during practice. He gave them advice based on the numbers, and the players worked hard to improve them. 3Three months later, the team won a local tournament. The players were jumping with joy, and the coach proudly held up the trophy. Everyone believed that the data had helped them win. 4The next month, however, the players were looking at their numbers instead of talking to each other. One player handed the coach a letter and said that basketball was not fun anymore. The coach looked shocked and did not know what to say.
No.1Please look at the fourth picture. If you were the coach, what would you be thinking?
I'd be thinking, "I focused too much on numbers and forgot that sports should be fun. I should have paid more attention to the players' feelings."
I'd be thinking, "Data is useful, but it isn't everything. I'll talk with this player and find a way to make practice enjoyable again."
No.2〜No.4(カードを裏返して)
No.2Do you think technology is making sports less exciting?
No, I don't think so. Technology actually makes sports more exciting for fans. For example, video replay systems help referees make fair decisions, and TV broadcasts show interesting data, such as the speed of a pitch or how far a player has run. These features help viewers understand the game better and enjoy it more deeply.
No.3Do you think winning is the most important thing in school sports?
No, I don't think so. School sports are part of education, so the main purpose should be helping students grow. Through club activities, students learn teamwork, discipline, and how to deal with failure. If coaches focus only on winning, less skilled students may lose interest and quit, even though they would benefit from playing.
No.4Today, many countries compete to host international sports events. Should Japan spend more money on hosting international sports events?
No, I don't think so. Hosting big events like the Olympics costs a huge amount of money, and some stadiums are rarely used afterward. That money would be better spent on things like healthcare and education. Instead, Japan could build more local sports facilities so that ordinary people can exercise more easily.
