Is ~ worth ~?
Are higher food prices worth paying to protect domestic farmers?
I believe higher food prices are worth paying to protect domestic farmers.
- stable supplyIf domestic farmers go out of business, Japan will depend even more on imports. Paying a fair price now helps ensure a stable food supply in the future.
- quality and safetyJapanese farm products are known for their quality and strict safety standards. Many consumers are willing to pay more for food they trust.
- fair incomeMany farmers earn very little, which is one reason young people do not want to take over family farms. Fair prices would allow farmers to make a decent living.
I don't believe higher food prices are worth paying, especially for low-income households.
- household burdenFood is a basic need, and higher prices hit poorer families the hardest. Recent increases in the price of rice and vegetables, for example, have put pressure on many family budgets.
- efficiencyProtecting farmers through high prices can discourage them from becoming more efficient. Larger farms and new technology could lower costs instead.
- direct supportIf the goal is to protect farmers, it is better to support them directly with subsidies than to make consumers pay more. This spreads the cost more fairly through the tax system.
QWhat about families who cannot afford higher prices?
That's a serious concern. Admittedly, higher prices are a heavy burden for low-income families. However, the government can help them directly, for example through food vouchers or free school meals. So I still believe fair prices for farmers are necessary, as long as vulnerable households are supported.
QHow much more would you be willing to pay for Japanese rice?
Personally, I would be willing to pay somewhat more, because I trust its quality and want local farming to continue. Of course, there is a limit. If prices doubled, many people, including me, would switch to cheaper options.
QCan farmers become more efficient instead?
Yes, and they should try. Combining small fields into larger farms and using new technology can reduce costs. But in hilly areas, large-scale farming is difficult, so some support will always be needed there.
