Is expanding online medical consultations worth the risks?
I believe expanding online consultations is worth the risks, because it makes medical care much more accessible.
- rural accessIn many rural areas, the nearest hospital is far away and there are few doctors. Online consultations allow patients to see a doctor without a long trip.
- conveniencePeople who are busy with work or childcare often put off seeing a doctor. Being able to consult a doctor from home makes it easier to get help early.
- infection controlPatients with infectious diseases can receive advice without visiting a crowded waiting room. This protects other patients and medical staff.
I don't believe it is worth the risks, because online consultations cannot replace a direct examination by a doctor.
- missed diagnosesDoctors cannot touch or listen to a patient's body through a screen. Some serious conditions might be overlooked.
- digital barriersMany elderly people, who need care the most, are not comfortable using smartphones or video calls. The system could leave them behind.
- privacy and misuseMedical data shared online could be leaked or hacked. There are also concerns that some online clinics prescribe medicine too easily.
QCan doctors really diagnose patients accurately through a screen?
Not in every case, I admit. Some conditions definitely require a physical examination. However, online consultations work well for follow-up visits and for patients with stable chronic conditions. When necessary, the doctor can simply ask the patient to come to the hospital.
QHow can elderly people who aren't good with technology use this service?
That's an important issue. One solution is to have nurses or family members help them during the consultation. Some areas are also trying to set up spaces in places such as pharmacies or community centers, where elderly people can get help with the technology.
QDo you think AI will eventually replace doctors?
I don't think AI will replace doctors completely. AI may become very good at analyzing symptoms and test results. However, patients also need a doctor who can explain things with care and make final decisions they can trust.
