- 最初の一言で方向Yes / No / It depends(+何によるか)/ That's a fair point のどれか。
That applies mainly to small towns. / Only if ~. / In the short term, yes.
I would qualify my view by saying that this applies mainly to large cities.
Do you mean in terms of cost, or in terms of public support?
That's an interesting question. Would it work in rural areas? I think it would, but more slowly.
- Why? Mainly because people follow rules they helped to make.
Imagine a mother pushing a stroller along a narrow sidewalk.
Going back to the road near my old school, ...
Can you give another example?
That's exactly why I think the city needs to lead.
I'm not familiar with the details, but in general, ~.
So should cars be banned? No, I wouldn't go that far.
So, overall, I still believe it's worth trying.
Toulmin(1958)『The Uses of Argument』
NG。I still stand by my main point.
That's a fair point. However, that applies mainly to ~ / would only be a problem if ~ / is a short-term issue. So I still believe 立場, because 理由.
That's a fair point. Admittedly, some shops might lose customers at first. However, that's mainly a short-term issue. So I still believe it's worth doing.
Mainly because 理由. For example, 例.
Why? に I think ~.
I'm not familiar with the details of 話題, but in general, 一般に言えること.
I would imagine that ~ で推測と分かる言い方にする。
Do you mean 解釈A, or 解釈B? / If I understand correctly, you're asking whether 言い直し.
Could you say that again, please?
I would qualify my view by saying that 条件・範囲. In most cases, 元の立場.
I still stand by my main point.
Not quite. What I meant was 本来の意味. So the two points fit together.
No, I wouldn't go that far. What I'm suggesting is 自分の主張の範囲.
|---|---|---|
But wouldn't that hurt ~? | That's a fair point. |
How would that work? | In practice, ~ |
Why do you think so? | Mainly because ~ |
Another example? | Certainly. ~ |
What about rural areas? | That's a different case. |
What would you do? | If I were ~, I'd ~ |
What would critics say? | They'd probably say ~ |
Do you know how ~? | I'm not familiar with ~ |
Isn't that contradictory? | Not quite. ~ |
So ban it entirely? | I wouldn't go that far. |
Wouldn't ~ be better? | That could help, but ~ |
NGNo, I don't think so. That's wrong.
OKThat's a fair point. Admittedly, some deliveries would take longer. However, that applies mainly to rush hour.
NGOh, you're right. Then my opinion was wrong.
OKThat's a good point, so I would qualify my view by saying that this works best in city centers.
NGI don't know.(沈黙)
OKI'm not familiar with the details, but in general, safer streets attract more people.
NGBecause it is important.
OKMainly because only universities can decide what students learn in class.
NGThat's an interesting question.(毎回)
OKWould people really give up their cars? Some would, if the alternatives were good enough.
NG(1分以上、話を広げ続ける)
OK... So, overall, I still believe it's worth trying.
But wouldn't ~? / Isn't there a risk that ~?
That's a fair point. However, that applies mainly to 限られた範囲. So I still believe 立場.
Q: Wouldn't a tax on empty houses hurt owners who simply can't afford to repair them?
A: That's a fair point. Admittedly, some owners are elderly people on a limited income. However, that applies mainly to a small group, and the tax could include exemptions for them. So I still believe the tax is the right approach overall.
I see what you mean. That would only be a problem if 問題が起きる条件. As long as 対策, 立場 still makes sense.
Q: If schools stop giving homework, won't some children just play video games all evening?
A: I see what you mean. That would only be a problem if children had nothing else to do. As long as schools encourage reading and family activities, a homework-free evening still makes sense.
仮定法(would only be ~ if)も正確に見せられる。
In the short term, yes, But in the long term, So I think it's worth 立場.
Q: Reviving sleeper trains would cost a lot of money. Isn't that a waste?
A: In the short term, yes, building new trains would be expensive. But in the long term, they could attract more tourists and give people an alternative to short flights. So I think it's worth the investment.
Why do you think so? / What makes you say that? Why?
Mainly because 理由. For example, 具体例.
Q: Why do you think lotteries are fairer than first-come, first-served sales?
A: Mainly because first-come, first-served sales favor people with fast internet connections and free time. For example, a nurse on a night shift has almost no chance of getting tickets the moment sales open. So a lottery gives everyone a more equal chance.
★イチ押しDo you know how ~?
I'm not familiar with the details of 話題, but in general, 一般に言えること.
Q: Do you know how other countries deal with empty houses?
A: I'm not familiar with the details of other countries' policies, but in general, when it costs money to keep something unused, people are more likely to use it. So I think a tax would work in a similar way here.
I didn't know that, but if that's the case,
Q: Some studies suggest that homework helps young children do better on tests. What do you think?
A: I didn't know that, but if that's the case, it's worth taking seriously. Even so, test scores are only one part of a child's development, and rest and curiosity matter just as much.
Is it realistic?
If you mean in terms of 観点A, 答えA. If you mean in terms of 観点B, 答えB.
Q: Is it realistic to tax empty houses?
A: If you mean in terms of cost, I think it is, because local governments already collect property taxes. If you mean in terms of public support, it may be harder at first, but people tend to accept it once they see run-down houses being repaired or sold.
If I understand correctly, you're asking whether 質問の言い直し.
Q: But what about people who rely on their cars to live in the countryside?
A: If I understand correctly, you're asking whether the test would leave elderly people in rural areas without a way to get around. I think that's a real risk, which is why the test must come with better local transport, such as on-demand buses.
Can you give another example?
Certainly. Another example that comes to mind is 新しい例. This also shows that 主張.
Q: Can you give another example of a bookstore that has survived?
A: Certainly. Another example that comes to mind is a bookstore that sells only picture books. Parents come from other towns because the staff can recommend exactly the right book for their child. This also shows that specializing can be a strength.
What would people who disagree with you say?
They would probably argue that 反対側の主な主張. That's an understandable concern. But in my view,
Q: What would people who disagree with you say?
A: They would probably argue that lotteries make it impossible for the most loyal fans to be sure of getting a ticket. That's an understandable concern. But in my view, loyalty is hard to measure fairly, and a lottery at least treats everyone the same way.
If you had to argue for the other side, what would you say?
If I had to argue the other side, I'd say that 反対側の最も強い理由. That said, I still find 自分の立場 more convincing, because 理由.
Q: If you had to argue for keeping homework, what would you say?
A: If I had to argue the other side, I'd say that homework helps children build study habits early. That said, I still find a homework-free approach more convincing, because good habits can also be built through reading for pleasure.
So should we ban all ~? / So you mean ~ completely?
No, I wouldn't go that far. What I'm suggesting is 自分の主張の本当の範囲.
Q: So should all zoos close down?
A: No, I wouldn't go that far. What I'm suggesting is that small city zoos should stop keeping animals that need a lot of space, such as elephants. Many zoos do valuable work, especially in protecting endangered species.
Isn't that a contradiction? / But you said ~ earlier.
Not quite. What I meant was 本来の意味. So the two points fit together.
Q: You said elderly drivers need tests, but you also said they need cars to live. Isn't that a contradiction?
A: Not quite. What I meant was that driving should be safe, not that older people should stop driving. Regular tests let safe drivers keep driving, while better buses help those who can't. So the two points fit together.
Would you personally ~? / What about you?
Q: Would you personally take a sleeper train instead of flying?
A: Personally, I would, at least for trips that take about one night. I like the idea of waking up already at my destination. But I understand that busy business travelers might still prefer flying, so both options should be available.
Have you ever ~?
To be honest, I haven't その経験 myself. But 身近な人の話・見聞きしたこと, and that makes me think 考え.
Q: Have you ever seen elephants at a small city zoo?
A: To be honest, I haven't seen that myself. But a friend who visited a small zoo told me the elephant there kept swaying back and forth in the same spot, and that makes me think it was under stress.
Is there another way? / Couldn't we just ~ instead?
One alternative would be to 代案. That way, 代案の利点. Ideally, though, it should go alongside 自分の案, not replace it, because 理由.
Q: Instead of a tax, couldn't the government just pay owners to fix up empty houses?
A: One alternative would be to offer grants for repairs, as you say. That way, owners would be encouraged rather than punished. Ideally, though, grants should go alongside the tax, not replace it, because some owners won't act without some pressure.
Is that realistic? / Do you think that could really happen?
I think it's realistic, but it would take time. The first step would be to 最初の一歩.
Q: Do you really think every school could stop giving homework?
A: I think it's realistic, but it would take time. The first step would be to try it in a few schools for one year. Once parents see that their children are learning just as well, other schools would be more willing to follow.
Who should pay for that? / Whose responsibility is it?
In practice, I think 主体A should take the lead, because 理由. But 主体B also has a role to play, for example, by B の役割.
Q: Who should pay for new sleeper trains?
A: In practice, I think the railway companies should take the lead, because they would benefit from the ticket sales. But local governments also have a role to play, for example, by promoting the trains as part of their tourism campaigns.
Would this work in other countries? / Is Japan different?
I can't speak for every country, but in general, 一般論. So 結論.
Q: Do you think this idea would work outside Japan?
A: I can't speak for every country, but in general, places with many empty houses face similar safety risks. In Japan, the problem is especially visible in rural towns with aging populations. So I think the basic idea could work in many places, with local adjustments.
That's a good point, and I'd like to qualify my view. In most cases, 元の立場.
Q: What about concerts where most of the audience are local schoolchildren?
A: That's a good point, and I'd like to qualify my view. In most cases, I think lotteries are the fairest system. But when a concert is mainly for local schoolchildren, it may be better to reserve tickets for those schools first.
Do you think ~? / Would ~?
Yes, I think so. / No, I don't think so. / It depends on 条件.
Q: Do you think parents would support this idea?
A: Yes, I think most of them would. Many parents already feel that weekday evenings are too busy. If schools explain the reasons clearly, I think support would grow over time.
... So, in short, 要点.
Q: Isn't it unfair to tax people who inherited a house they never wanted?
A: That's a fair point. Some people inherit houses far from where they live and don't know what to do with them. In that case, local governments could help them sell or donate the house. So, overall, the tax should come with support, but I still believe it's necessary.
What if 〜?
仮定の質問 What if 〜? には、If that happened, 〜 would 〜.
If that happened, some small shops would have to close, but most could adapt.
How would that work in practice?
First, local governments could run a one-year trial in a few cities.
What about other countries?
The basic problem is similar, but in countries with large rural areas, the situation may be different.
I'm not sure that's always the case.
Do you think it will happen soon?
Would you personally 〜? と聞かれたら、Personally, I would 〜 because 〜.
Personally, I would use it, because it would save me a lot of time.
Let me answer the first part first. Could you say that again, please?
That's a complex issue, but in short, 〜.
That's a complex issue, but in short, I think the benefits are greater.
It depends on what we mean by 〜.
It depends on what we mean by "success." If it means financial security, then yes.
That's an exception rather than the rule.
家族に But 〜?
Even if that's true, 〜(仮にそうでも)で受けて主張に戻ろう。
Even if that's true, the long-term benefits would still outweigh the costs.
It's hard to predict, but I think 〜.
It's hard to predict, but I think more people will work part-time in their sixties.

You said fewer lanes would make streets safer. But wouldn't traffic jams get worse, and delivery trucks get stuck?
That's a fair point. Admittedly, deliveries might take longer at first. However, that would mainly be a problem at rush hour, and some cities already ask trucks to deliver early in the morning. So I still believe the benefits for pedestrians are worth a little extra time on the road.
Who should pay for these green spaces?
In practice, I think the city should pay for the basic work, such as removing the asphalt and planting trees. But local shops could help maintain the space, because they would benefit from more people walking by. Sharing the cost like this would also make residents feel that the space belongs to them.
So, should cars be banned from city centers altogether?
No, I wouldn't go that far. Ambulances, buses, and people with disabilities still need to use those roads. What I'm suggesting is turning one or two lanes into green space, not closing the road. A gradual change is much more likely to win public support.
I wouldn't go that far
What about rural areas, where people depend on cars?
That's a different case. In rural areas, roads are often the only link to hospitals and supermarkets, so I wouldn't reduce lanes there. My point applies mainly to busy city centers, where there are good trains and buses. So I would qualify my view by saying it's an urban solution.
I would qualify my view で修正。
Do you know of any cities abroad that have done this successfully?
I'm not familiar with the details of specific cases, but I've read that several European cities have turned busy roads into pedestrian areas. In general, when streets become pleasant to walk along, more people tend to spend time there. So I think Japanese cities could learn a lot from those examples.
Would you personally give up your car if your city did this?
If I lived in the city center, I probably would. I already take the train to work, so I mainly use my car for shopping. If there were nicer streets and more shops within walking distance, I could easily manage without it.
(If I lived ~, I would ~)で正確に。
You said universities should take most of the responsibility, but you also said there are limits. Isn't that a bit contradictory?
Not quite. What I meant was that universities are responsible for what happens inside the university, such as the skills they teach and the chances they offer. Things outside their control, such as the economy, are a different matter. So the two points fit together: universities should do a lot, but not everything.
Not quite.
Why do you think talks by graduates make such a difference?
Mainly because students trust real people more than brochures. If a website says, 'This job is exciting,' it sounds like an advertisement. But when a graduate talks honestly about both the good and bad sides of a job, students can imagine themselves doing it. So these connections really do matter.
Can you give another example of what universities could do?
Certainly. Universities could offer short workshops on writing job applications and practicing interviews. My cousin's university started doing this last year, and he says it made him much less nervous in his job interviews. I doubt he's the only one. Workshops like this cost universities very little.
What would people who disagree with you say?
They would probably say that universities are places for learning and research, not job training. That's a reasonable concern, especially for subjects like history or philosophy. However, skills such as writing clearly and working in teams are useful in any field. Teaching them doesn't mean giving up academic study.
Wouldn't it be better for companies to train new employees themselves, rather than relying on universities?
Do you mean training in basic skills, or training for specific jobs?
Mainly basic skills.
I see. Companies certainly have a role, and many already train their new staff. But four years at university is far more time than a few weeks of company training. That's exactly why I believe universities still carry most of the responsibility.
- That's a fair point.
- Admittedly, it would take some time to get used to.
- However, that applies mainly to large companies.
- That would only be a problem if the rules were poorly designed.
- In the short term, yes, but not in the long term.
- So I still believe it's the right direction.
- I would qualify my view by saying that it works best in cities.
- I still stand by my main point.
- That's exactly why I think the city should take the lead.
- Do you mean in terms of cost, or in terms of public support?
- If I understand correctly, you're asking whether it would work in rural areas.
- Mainly because people follow rules they helped to make.
- Certainly. Another example that comes to mind is online health checks.
- I'm not familiar with the details, but in general, safer streets attract more people.
- Not quite. What I meant was that it depends on the cause.
- No, I wouldn't go that far.
- They would probably say that it's too expensive.
- If I were the mayor, I would start with a small trial on one street.
- So, overall, I still believe it's worth trying.
