- 1Although it was written as a guide for travelers, the book has become a work of literature in its own .
答えa right
解説in its own right で「それ自体で・独立して」。 light は in the same light(同じ見方で)、sight は in sight(見えて)、might は with all one's might(全力で)の形で使い、in its own 〜 の熟語にならない。
【覚える】in one's own right=それ自体で・本来の資格で。in one's own way=それなりに。 - 2is often the case with first-year students, Mika found the reading list overwhelming.
答えb As
As is often the case with 〜 で「〜にはよくあることだが」。 It is often the case …
As is often the case (with 〜)=よくあることだが(as は主節の前にも置ける関係詞)。 - 3Historians now see the war in a completely different thanks to newly discovered letters.
解説see A in a different light で「Aを違った見方でとらえる」。 flight(飛行)、right(権利)、sight(視力・光景)は in a different 〜 で「見方」の意味にならない。
【覚える】see / put A in a different light(違った見方をする)/in the same light(同じ見方で)。 - 4The school budget was prepared on the that the number of students would continue to rise.
解説on the assumption that 〜 で「〜という前提で」。後ろの that 節と結べるのは assumption(想定・前提)だけ。consumption(消費)、exemption(免除)、resumption(再開)は -sumption / -mption の形をそろえた罠で、that 節をとらない。
【覚える】on the assumption that = assuming that(〜と仮定して)。assume→assumption。 - 5Volunteers work at the center on a part-time .
答えa basis
on a part-time basis(パートタイムで)、on a daily basis(毎日)、on a regular basis(定期的に)。 basin(盆地・洗面器)、bias(偏見)は形が似ているだけ。
【覚える】on a daily / weekly / regular / voluntary basis=毎日・毎週・定期的に・自発的に。 - 6Rising prices reduce consumer spending, which turn slows down economic growth.
答えa in
at / on は turn と組んでこの意味にならない(take turns=交代でする)。
【覚える】in turn=今度は・順番に/by turns=交互に/take turns -ing=交代で〜する。 - 7how little time we have left, we should focus on the most important points.
答えa Given
Driven(駆り立てられて)、Proven(証明されて)は how little time … Taken は taken together(まとめて考えると)、taking 〜 into account(〜を考慮して)の形でなら使える。
【覚える】Given+名詞 / that S V=〜を考えると(=considering)。 - 8Some people are so fearful making mistakes that they never try anything new.
答えd of
解説be fearful of 〜 で「〜を恐れる」(be afraid of と同じ of)。so 〜 that …(とても〜なので…) at / with は fearful と結びつかない。
【覚える】be fearful / afraid / scared / frightened of 〜=〜を恐れる。 - 9The structure of a human society is in some ways analogous that of an ant colony.
答えb to
解説be analogous to 〜 で「〜に類似している」(similar to と同じ to)。that は the structure の代わりで、that of an ant colony=アリの群れの構造。 for / from / with は analogous と結びつかない(different from は「違う」)。
- 10Only research projects that fulfill all the will receive funding from the city.
答えa criteria
criteria は criterion(基準)の複数形。credits(単位・信用)、crises(crisis=危機の複数形)、critics(批評家)は cri- で始まる形の罠。
【覚える】criterion → criteria/crisis → crises/phenomenon → phenomena(不規則な複数形)。 - 11Working in a hospital requires close attention detail.
答えd to
動詞の pay attention to 〜 と同じ to。 at / for / on は attention と組んでこの意味にならない。
【覚える】pay (close) attention to 〜/attention to detail(細部への配慮)。 - 12My grandmother would have loved you to meet my grandfather.
答えa for
解説would have loved for A to do で「Aが〜してくれたらよかったのに・Aに〜してほしかった」(主にアメリカ英語の口語)。for A が不定詞 to meet の意味上の主語。would love for A to do も同じ形。of A は It is kind of you
【覚える】would love (for) A to do=Aに〜してほしい。 - 13you decide to major in, make sure it is a subject you really enjoy.
答えa Whatever
However(どんなに〜でも)、Whenever(いつ〜しても)、Wherever(どこで〜しても)は副詞の働きなので、in の後ろが空いたままになる。
- 14With sea levels rising every year, moving the village to higher ground seems .
解説海面が毎年上がる→村の移転は避けられない、なので inevitable(必然の・避けられない)。 inaugural(就任の)、insolent(無礼な)も文脈に合わない。
【覚える】inevitable = unavoidable(避けられない)。invaluable = priceless(非常に貴重な)。 - 15The mountain looked so , with its dark, steep cliffs, that we almost turned back.
looked(〜に見えた)と with its dark, steep cliffs(暗く険しい崖)、we almost turned back(引き返しそうになった)が決め手。 forgetful(忘れっぽい)、forgiving(寛大な)は山の様子に合わない。
- 16The app is so that even my grandparents learned to use it without reading the manual.
解説説明書なしで祖父母でも使える=直感的でわかりやすい、なので intuitive(直感的な)。intrusive(押しつけがましい・立ち入る)と invasive(侵略的な・侵襲的な)はマイナスの意味。intensive(集中的な)は使いやすさと関係がない。int- / inv- で始まる形の似た語を並べた罠。
- 17The of the smartphone, which serves as a camera, a map, and a wallet, has changed daily life.
解説which serves as a camera, a map, and a wallet(カメラ・地図・財布として役立つ)から、1つでいろいろに使える=versatility(汎用性・多才さ)。disparity(格差)、retention(保持)、spontaneity(自発性)はスマホの特徴を表さない。
- 18Instead of rejecting new technology, the old village it and became a center of online craft sales.
解説Instead of rejecting(拒む代わりに)と逆の向きなので、embraced(受け入れた)。 appease(なだめる)、discern(見分ける)は文脈に合わない。
【覚える】embrace = accept = adopt(受け入れる)↔ reject。 - 19The gap between rich and poor has widened, and this in income is a serious social problem.
解説前半の the gap between rich and poor(貧富の差)を this で受けて言い換える名詞なので disparity(格差・不均衡)。 retention(保持)、spontaneity(自発性)、versatility(汎用性)は gap の言い換えにならない。
【覚える】disparity = gap = inequality(格差)。 - 20Young children's brains are highly : they change in response to experience.
答えa plastic
解説コロンの後の they change in response to experience(経験に応じて変わる)が言い換えになっているので plastic(可塑的な・形を変えられる)。 drastic(極端な・抜本的な)、fanciful(空想的な)、formidable(手ごわい)は「経験で変わる」の説明にならない。
- 21The suspect continued to that he had been at the scene of the crime.
答えa deny
defy(逆らう)、define(定義する)、delay(遅らせる)は de- で始まる1字違いの罠。
【覚える】deny -ing / that S V(〜を否定する)↔ admit -ing / that S V(〜を認める)。 - 22After years of debate, the committee decided to the old rules and start again from scratch.
解説start again from scratch(一からやり直す)とつながるのは、古い規則を discard(捨て去る)こと。disclose(公表する・明かす)、discern(見分ける)、dismay(落胆させる)は dis- で始まる形の似た語で、「やり直す」とつながらない。
【覚える】discard = throw away = get rid of(捨てる)。 - 23Even experts are ; they sometimes make serious mistakes.
答えa fallible
解説fallible は fall(誤る)+-ible(〜しうる)で「誤りを犯しうる」。 infallible(絶対に誤らない)は逆の意味。 formidable(手ごわい)、fortuitous(偶然の)は合わない。
【覚える】fallible(誤りうる)↔ infallible(絶対確実な)。
Many people assume that a translation is merely a copy of the original, a second-best version for readers who cannot manage the source language. ( 1 ) that a translator must make hundreds of choices on every page, however, this view seems ridiculous. A good translation is a work of art ( 2 ): it has its own rhythm, its own voice, and sometimes even its own admirers. Of course, translators must work within the ( 3 ) of the original text and cannot change the story as they please. In that ( 4 ), they are more like musicians performing a piece written by someone else than like composers. Readers who are new to world literature could do ( 5 ) than start with a carefully translated classic.
- 24( 1 )
答えa Given
Given that S V = Considering that S V(〜を考慮すると)。 - 25( 2 )
答えc in its own right
on the right(右側に)、all right(大丈夫)、right away(すぐに)は名詞 a work of art の後に置いて意味が通らない。
【覚える】a work of art in its own right=それ自体で一つの芸術作品。 - 26( 3 )
解説within the boundaries of 〜 で「〜の範囲内で・枠内で」。直後の cannot change the story as they please(好きなように物語を変えられない)が制約の意味を裏づける。horizons(視野・地平線)、margins(余白・利ざや)、outskirts(郊外)は within the 〜 of the original text で「制約」の意味にならない。
【覚える】within the boundaries / limits / bounds of 〜=〜の範囲内で。 - 27( 4 )
解説In that respect で「その点では」。 expectation(期待)、inspection(検査)、suspicion(疑い)は In that 〜 で「その点では」にならない。
【覚える】in this / that respect=この・その点で。with respect to 〜=〜に関して。 - 28( 5 )
解説could do worse than 〜 で「〜するのも悪くない」(おすすめ)。 more / less は do と結びつかない。
You could do worse than+原形 / -ing=〜するのも悪くない(遠回しに勧める)。
- 29Your advice has been invaluable to me during my first year at college.
答えa extremely helpful
of no use(役に立たない)と not very important(あまり重要でない)はその罠。
【覚える】invaluable = priceless(非常に貴重)↔ worthless(無価値)。 - 30My sister relishes the challenge of solving difficult puzzles.
strongly dislikes(ひどく嫌う)、carefully avoids(注意して避ける)はマイナスの向きで消せる。quickly forgets(すぐ忘れる)も合わない。
【覚える】relish = enjoy = savor(楽しむ・味わう)。 - 31The reviews of the new film were overwhelmingly positive.
答えa to a very great degree
only to a small degree(わずかに)は逆。for a short time(短期間)は時間、without any reason(理由もなく)は理由の話で、程度の副詞とは関係がない。
【覚える】overwhelmingly = extremely = to a great extent。 - 32After the spring rains, the hills were lush again.
答えb covered with thick green plants
After the spring rains(春の雨の後)という文脈とも合う。dry and bare(乾いてむき出しの)はちょうど逆の意味。crowded with tourists(観光客で混雑した)、hidden by fog(霧に隠れた)は lush の意味と関係がない。
【覚える】lush = green = luxuriant(青々と茂った)↔ barren(不毛の)。 - 33During the outbreak, the patients were confined to their rooms.
答えb kept within
removed from(〜から移された)は逆向き。welcomed into(〜に迎え入れられた)、guided around(〜を案内された)は意味が違う。
【覚える】be confined to 〜 = be limited / restricted to 〜(〜に限られる・閉じ込められる)。 - 34His facetious remark annoyed the audience, who had come to hear a serious lecture.
答えb joking at the wrong time
carefully prepared(入念に準備された)、extremely long(非常に長い)、deeply moving(深く感動的な)では、聴衆がいらだつ理由にならない。
