- 1Students must for the seminar online before April 10.
admit(入学・入場を認める)は大学側が主語になる動詞。record(記録する)は for the seminar と合わない。
【覚える】register for / sign up for / apply for=〜に登録する・申し込む。 - 2The professor asked us to our sources at the end of the essay.
答えa cite
cite / sight(視力・光景)/ site(場所・サイト)は同じ発音の別語で、つづりで区別させるひっかけ。
- 3The library has extended its opening hours the exam period.
答えa during
while(〜する間に)は接続詞で、後ろに S+V が必要(while students are taking exams)。among(3者以上の間で)、between(2者の間で)は期間には使わない。
【覚える】during+名詞(期間)/while+S V。 - 4The number of international students on campus has by 20 percent since 2020.
by 20 percent の by は「差」を表す。
- 5Neither the lecturer nor the students aware that the room had been changed.
答えa were
B は the students(複数)なので were。was は A の the lecturer(単数)に合わせた誤り。
【覚える】neither A nor B / either A or B / not only A but also B=動詞は B に一致。both A and B は複数。 - 6The results of the survey that most students study less than two hours a day.
The results of the survey=複数扱い。 - 7It is essential that every participant the consent form before the experiment begins.
It is essential / necessary / important that … signed(過去形)、will sign(未来)も不可。
It is essential / necessary / vital that S (should)+原形。suggest / insist / demand that … - 8Please yourself with the safety rules before using the laboratory.
realize(気づく)、recognize(認識する)も同様。
【覚える】familiarize oneself with = get familiar with = become acquainted with(〜に精通する)。 - 9Because of the typhoon, the deadline for the essay has been until next Monday.
until next Monday(来週月曜まで)とも合う。expand(規模・範囲を広げる)は締め切りには使わない。 extract(抜き出す)は意味が合わない。
【覚える】extend a deadline / a visa / one's stay(期限を延ばす)。expand a business(事業を拡大する)。

- 10Who are the tutors?
答えc Senior students who have received training
The tutors are senior students who have completed a special training course.(チューターは特別な研修課程を修了した上級生)。 Professors from the English department(英文科の教授)、Professional writers from outside(学外のプロの作家)は本文にない。First-year students who write well(文章のうまい1年生)は、メールの宛先である1年生と混同させる罠。
- 11What must students do to use the service?
答えd Make a reservation online at least two days beforehand
To book a session, please use the online system at least two days in advance.。正解は book → make a reservation、in advance → beforehand と言い換えている。Visit Room 302 at any time without a reservation(予約なしでいつでも行く)は予約が必要という内容と矛盾。Pay a small fee(少額の料金を払う)は free(無料)と矛盾。
【覚える】book = reserve = make a reservation/in advance = beforehand。 - 12Which of the following is true about the sessions?
答えd Students should bring a paper copy of their writing.
Bring a printed copy of your draft(下書きを印刷したものを持ってきてください)で、正解は printed copy を paper copy と言い換えている。Tutors correct every grammar error(文法の誤りをすべて直す)は will not correct every grammar mistake と矛盾。Sessions are held on weekends(週末に行う)は weekdays と矛盾。Each session lasts one hour(1時間)は last 40 minutes と矛盾。
- 13What will happen to a student who misses two booked sessions without notice?
答えc They cannot make any more bookings that semester.
Students who miss two booked sessions without notice will not be able to make further bookings that semester.。 must pay a fine(罰金を払う)は本文にない。must take a training course(研修を受けなければならない)は、training course という本文の語を使っているが、それはチューターの条件として出てきたもので罰則ではない。be asked to become a tutor(チューターを頼まれる)も本文にない。
[1] When we read on a screen, many of us skim. Our eyes jump from heading to heading, picking up key words, and we often feel that we have understood the text. Several studies, however, have found that readers tend to understand long texts better when they read them on paper. One explanation is that paper gives readers a physical sense of where information is located: near the top of a left-hand page, or about two-thirds of the way through a book. These “landmarks” help the mind build a map of the text. [2] This does not mean that screens are the enemy of deep reading. The difference seems to depend less on the device than on the reader's habits. When people are told to read carefully and are given enough time, the gap between paper and screen tends to become smaller. The problem is that screens are usually associated with quick activities such as checking messages, and readers carry those habits into longer texts. [3] The practical lesson is simple. For short, easy texts, the medium hardly matters. For long or difficult texts, however, readers should either print them out or deliberately slow down on the screen, treating the text as something to study rather than scan.

- 14What does the word “landmarks” in [1] refer to?
答えd Physical clues about where information appears in a text
Physical clues about where information appears
直前の具体例(near the top of a left-hand page)を見る。 - 15According to [2], why do people tend to read less carefully on screens?
答えd They bring habits from quick activities such as checking messages.
解説根拠は The problem is that … 正解は carry those habits into longer texts を bring habits from quick activities と言い換えている。Screens damage readers' eyesight(画面が視力を損なう)、Texts on screens are always shorter(画面の文章は必ず短い)、Screens do not show page numbers(ページ番号が出ない)は、どれも本文にない。
【覚える】The problem is that … - 16Which statement best reflects the author's view?
答えc The reader's habits matter more than the device itself.
解説根拠は[2]の depend less on the device than on the reader's habits。正解は depend less on A than on B を B matters more than A と言い換えている。Screens should never be used for studying(勉強に画面を使うべきではない)は[2]冒頭の「画面は深い読書の敵ではない」と矛盾。Paper is always better for every kind of text(紙は常にあらゆる文章に優れる)は[3]の「短い文章ならどちらでもよい」と矛盾。Skimming is the best way(拾い読みが最善)は逆。
【覚える】less A than B = B more than A(AよりむしろB)。 - 17According to [3], what should readers do with a long, difficult text on a screen?
答えd Read it slowly and treat it as material to study.
解説根拠は[3]の deliberately slow down on the screen, treating the text as something to study rather than scan(画面上でわざとゆっくり読み、ざっと目を通すものではなく学ぶものとして扱う)。Skim it quickly before reading the headings(見出しを読む前にざっと拾い読みする)は、筆者が避けるべきとする読み方。Avoid reading it at all(まったく読まない)、Read only the first and last paragraphs(最初と最後の段落だけ読む)は本文にない。
- 18Which is the best title for the passage?
答えa Paper or Screen? It Depends on How We Read
Paper or Screen? It Depends on How We Read The End of Printed Books(紙の本の終わり)は本文と無関係。How to Skim Faster on a Smartphone(スマホで速く拾い読みする方法)は筆者の主張と逆。
The passage argues that people often understand long texts better on paper, partly because paper gives physical clues that help them remember where information is. However, the author says the device matters less than reading habits: people tend to skim on screens because they associate screens with quick activities. Therefore, for long or difficult texts, readers should either print them out or read slowly on the screen.
The passage argues that …
I believe universities should provide long and difficult materials on paper, but short ones online. According to the survey, 68 percent of students said that long materials are easier to understand on paper. This suggests that paper copies can improve learning in courses that require careful reading. On the other hand, printing costs about two million yen per semester for a single department, and some of this money is probably spent on short handouts that students could easily read on a screen. A possible solution would be to print only long readings and share everything else online. On balance, this approach supports learning while reducing costs.
According to the survey, … /This suggests that … の型が便利 ③反対側の事情(On the other hand)にも触れてから結論(On balance)。
【覚える】資料型英作文:According to …(事実)→ This suggests that …(解釈)→ 結論。
According to the graph, the number of library users rose sharply between 2020 and 2024.
①「利用者数」は the number of library users で、the number of+複数名詞は単数扱い ②「急増した」は自動詞 rise の過去形 rose+sharply(rapidly)。 According to the graph(グラフによると)で始める。
【覚える】グラフ表現:rise / increase sharply(急増)、fall / decline gradually(徐々に減少)、remain stable(横ばい)。
