What does the author think is the value of reading?
答えa The author thinks that reading is valuable because it lets us see the world from other people's points of view.
正解はこれを lets us see the world from other people's points of view と表し、主語を The author にして著者の考えとして答えている。I think … a lot of information The author thinks … a lot of information reading is useful for getting information quickly(すばやく情報を得るのに役立つ)も否定された側。
The author thinks / argues that … Explain what the author thinks and why.
答えb The author thinks that we should try new things without fearing failure, because we learn a lot from failure and not trying is the greatest loss.
解説設問は what(考え)と why(理由)の2点を求めている。 we should avoid failure because it wastes our time(時間の無駄だから失敗は避けよ)は本文と逆。successful people never fail(成功者は決して失敗しない)は本文にない理由。
What does the author mean by the underlined part?
答えb By this, the author means that young people read a lot of words but have fewer chances to read slowly and deeply.
正解は read a lot of words but have fewer chances to read slowly and deeply と両方を入れている。do not read anything at all(何も読まない)は「大量に読んでいる」と矛盾。should read more books(もっと本を読むべき)は量の話に戻っている。smartphones are more useful than books(スマホは本より役立つ)は本文にない。
By this, the author means that …。 According to the author, what two things are necessary to be a good listener?
答えd The author says that we should not interrupt the speaker and that we should check our understanding by restating what the speaker has said in our own words.
正解は not interrupt the speaker と check our understanding by restating … in our own words を that 節2つで並べている。 agree with the speaker and repeat the speaker's words exactly(同意して言葉をそのまま繰り返す)は「自分の言葉で言い直す」と違う。I believe … ask many questions
restate=言い直す、in one's own words=自分の言葉で。 What does the author warn against, and why?
答えa The author warns against chasing short-term profit, because it can lead to a bigger loss in the long run.
正解は chasing short-term profit(目先の利益の追求)と can lead to a bigger loss in the long run(長期的には大損につながりうる)で、「〜ことがある」を can で表している。saving money for the future(将来のための貯金)は本文と無関係。 never think about profit at all(利益を一切考えるな)も言い過ぎ。
- 6The author also p out that many people misunderstand this idea.
【覚える】著者の動作を表す動詞:point out / argue / claim / suggest / conclude that …(すべて3単現の -s を忘れない)。 - 7By this expression, the author m that we should value small daily pleasures.
By this expression, the author means that …(この表現で筆者が意味しているのは〜だ)なので means。
By this (expression), the author means that … / What the author means is that …。 - 8In o words, the author is saying that success is not the only goal of education.
答えother
解説In other words(言い換えれば)で o で始まる語は other。 In another words とは言わない(words は複数なので other)。似た働きの表現に That is (to say)(つまり)、Put simply(簡単に言えば)がある。
In other words = That is (to say) = Namely(すなわち)。 - 9F these reasons, the author concludes that we should spend more time in nature.
答えFor
解説For these reasons(これらの理由から)で F で始まる語は For。 Because of these reasons でも意味は通るが、やや冗長で、For these reasons のほうが簡潔で自然。
For these reasons, the author concludes that …(要約の締め)。 - 10The author ar that handwritten letters are still worth writing.
asserts(断言する)や believes(考える)でも意味は通るが、指定の文字 ar に合うのは argues だけ。
【覚える】argue that …=主張する/argue with 人=人と口論する/argue for / against 〜=〜に賛成・反対の論を張る。 - 11The author's main point is that we can learn a great deal f our mistakes.
答えfrom
a great deal(大いに)が間に入っているが、learn a great deal from our mistakes の形。The author's main point is that …(筆者の要点は〜だ)は、要約答案の1文目にそのまま使える型。
【覚える】learn from one's mistakes(失敗から学ぶ)/The author's main point is that …。
- 12Due to the fact that it was raining, the game was put off.
答えBecause it was raining, the game was put off.
Due to the fact that(〜という事実のために)は because 1語で言える冗長な表現。 Because of the rain, the game was put off. / The game was put off because it was raining. put off を postponed に変えてもよい。
【覚える】due to the fact that = because。because of / due to+名詞。 - 13The author made a decision to move to the countryside.
答えThe author decided to move to the countryside.
解説make a decision to do(〜する決定をする)は、動詞1語 decide to do で言える。名詞+動詞の組み合わせ(make a decision / give an explanation / make an improvement)を動詞1語(decide / explain / improve)にすると語数が減り、文もすっきりする。
【覚える】make a decision=decide/give an explanation=explain/have a discussion=discuss。 - 14A large number of people visit the museum in order to see the painting.
答えMany people visit the museum to see the painting.
解説a large number of(多数の)は many 1語で、in order to(〜するために)は to だけで同じ意味になる。 主語と目的語(the museum / the painting)は変えない。
【覚える】a large number of = many/a great deal of = much/in order to = to。 - 15It seems to me that, at the present time, young people read less than they did in the past.
答えI think young people now read less than before.
It seems to me that(私には〜と思われる)は I think、at the present time(現在のところ)は now、than they did in the past(過去にそうだったより)は than before と、3か所を短くできる。
【覚える】at the present time = now/in the past → before/It seems to me that = I think。
Especially when you are in a hurry, choosing a safe and reliable way is actually faster in the end.
The more you hurry, the … 「確実な方法」は a safe and reliable way、「結局は」は in the end、主語の「選ぶこと」は動名詞 choosing で。別解:When you are in a hurry, it is often quicker in the end to choose a reliable method.
People become good at the things they enjoy doing.
採点ポイントは①「好き」=enjoy / like ②「上手になる」=become good at / get better at の2点。別解:If you like something, you will get better at it. / You can improve quickly at what you love doing.
get better at 〜=〜が上達する。
Things that seem like a detour at first often turn out to be shortcuts.
解説「一見〜に思える」は seem like / seem to be 〜 at first、「実は〜であるとわかる」は turn out to be 〜。 detour が書けなければ things that seem to waste time at first と言い換えればよい。別解:What looks like the long way around is often actually the quickest way.
【覚える】turn out to be 〜 = prove to be 〜(〜だとわかる)。
It is important to relax and enjoy what you are doing.
It is important to do 「楽しむ」は目的語が必要なので enjoy what you are doing / enjoy yourself とする(enjoy だけで終えない)。別解:It is important to enjoy things without trying too hard.
without trying too hard=無理をせずに。
- 20What is the author worried about, and why? Answer in English in about 80 words.
答えThe author is worried that, because we can look up answers on our smartphones right away, we may become unable to put up with not knowing. This is because, for the author, knowing an answer and thinking are different things. As a child, the author spent days wondering why the sky is blue. Although the author did not find the correct answer alone, making and rejecting ideas showed the author that thinking itself is enjoyable.(75語)
「一抹の不安」は be worried that …
- 21What does the author mean by the underlined word 寄り道? Answer in English in about 40 words.
答えBy this word, the author means taking a little time to think for ourselves before looking up the answer. Although this seems to slow us down, the author believes it is actually a shortcut to making knowledge our own.(39語)
By this word, the author means -ing / that …
