For centuries, many European maps had few empty spaces. Where mapmakers lacked information, they filled the gaps with imaginary mountains, sea monsters, or simply decorative patterns. Around the sixteenth century, however, some mapmakers began to leave unknown areas blank. (1)This apparently small change reflected a new attitude: it was not knowledge but the admission of ignorance that sent explorers out to sea. A blank space on a map was an invitation. Modern science, some historians argue, grew out of the same attitude. Earlier traditions tended to assume that everything important was already known, and that the task of a scholar was to preserve and explain it. Science, by contrast, begins with the words "we do not know." (2)A theory, however well established, is treated as the best answer available for now, not as the final truth. In this sense, (3)every scientist works with a map full of blank spaces, and it is precisely those spaces that make the work worth doing.
