We often think of forgetting as a failure of memory, something to be fought with notes, reminders, and endless repetition. Yet a mind that remembered everything would be less a library than a warehouse(ア): full, but impossible to use. To think is to select, and selection requires leaving things behind. When we forget the details of an argument but keep its main point, we have not lost knowledge; we have shaped it. In this sense, forgetting is not the enemy of learning but one of its quiet partners.
