[1] Many people believe that the more information we have, the better our decisions will be. Before buying a phone, we read dozens of reviews; before choosing a university, we compare rankings, fees, and campus photos. It seems obvious that more facts can only help. Yet there is reason to doubt this seemingly(ア) common-sense view. [2] First, information is not free. Every review we read costs time and attention, and both are limited. Beyond a certain point, the effort of gathering more facts outweighs(イ) the small improvement they bring. Second, and more importantly, extra information can actually make our choices worse. When we are flooded with details, we tend to focus on those that are easiest to compare, such as prices or numbers, even when they are not the ones that matter most to us. A student choosing a university may end up paying more attention to a small difference in a ranking than to whether the courses match his or her interests. [3] This does not mean that we should choose blindly.(ウ) The point is that good decisions depend less on the amount of information than on knowing what we want before we start looking. Someone who has decided in advance which two or three qualities matter most can ignore the rest of the noise. In this sense, the most useful information is often not out in the world but already within us: a clear idea of our own priorities.
